Aranui community catch up at 7 AFFIRM
The biggest community event this side of xmas!
Auckland band Sweet & Irie, playing their brand of distinctive reggae music from the South Pacific, heads the wide range of activities at 7 AFFIRM, the Aranui Family Festival being held next month.
An exciting new addition to 7 AFFIRM’s annual community get-together is the Dress Up as a Superhero competition, where organisers are inviting all to dress up as their favourite superhero during the Festival to win prizes.
7 AFFIRM the Aranui Family Festival will take place on Saturday 13 December at Wainoni Park in Hampshire Street from 10.15am to 4.00pm.
While food and fun is still an integral part of the annual six-hour presentation of entertainment, learning and training at the Wainoni Park, 7 AFFIRM also offers activities like education and health advisories to add meaning to the community gathering. This is part of the AFFIRMative Action in Aranui programme, which lends itself to the name 7 AFFIRM.
“Evaluation from AFFIRM in past years tell us that this has become a necessary and important occasion in the community,” says Rachael Fonotia of the Aranui Community Trust Incorporated Society (ACTIS).
‘It is not just a fun day. It is a day the community can catch up with each other, as well seeing what services are available to them,” says Ms Fonotia.
Dozens of organisations, including health services and training and educational institutes, will set up stalls to provide advise and guidance to the community on that day.
There are also heap of activities on offer for the children: races, games and have-a-go activities with local schools performances and several local bands also, says Ms Fonotia
Events also include:
New attraction: pamper tent for Mums, Dads and Grandparents
Teams competing in the local version of “Top Town”.
The Aranui Strongest Man Competition
Fifteen free gym memberships giveaways from QEII, Les Mills and the YMCA.
The opening ceremony will include Local MP Lianne Dalziel being led on stage with the traditional sound of the Scottish bag pipes.
The event is sponsored by Eureka Trust, Aranui Community Trust, CCC, HNZC and Burwood/Pegasus community board.
Ms Fonotia is expecting a huge turn out. If wet, 7 AFFIRM will be at Cowles Stadium, 170 Pages Road.
