Dear Friends,
In celebration of Warwick Blair's video installation Stars, we invite you to Sidewalk Astronomy, this Saturday November 29 at 10pm.
Sidewalk Astronomy is an event founded in the 1960s. Quite simply it involves bringing telescopes to urban areas (like sidewalks) to show passers-by some of the more prominent features of the night or daytime sky, free-of-charge. This event is presented by local Astronomer and film maker Paul Moss. He cites the original concept behind the project - "that when people see through a telescope they think about their ancient origins, who we are and where we are going".
Sidewalk Astronomy is presented as the opening celebration for Stars, a video installation by musician Warwick Blair, singer Sandhya Badakere and Paul Moss. From November 29 - December 24 Stars will play on the Film Archive’s Loading Bay screen on Taranaki St.
Stars features images of the night sky. Each day of the Stars installation is a 24 hour work divided into 8 sections of 3 hours each (called praharas) that correspond to the Gandharva Veda time theory (called samaya chakra) where specific qualities of music are applied to specific times of the day. This establishes a harmonious resonance, ultimately creating peace/health for the individual, society and the environment. Stars has been created by composer Warwick Blair with images by Paul Moss and the voice of Sandhya Badakere.
