DAY DREAMS START FIRES
For immediate release:
Day Dreams Start Fires is collaboration between the poetry of Auckland-based MC Tourettes and the works of twelve Auckland artists including
Misery, Askew, Deus, Cut Collective, Kerry Anne Lee and Gasp, among others. Art works will be sold as A1 prints at $60
making it affordable to the public. The exhibition opens Thursday 30th October at 7:30pm with performances from
Tourettes, Drab Do Riffs, R.E.S and Chyphanetik.
The exhibition will be available for viewing Friday 31st October - Saturday 15th November at The Basement, Lower Greys
Ave from 7pm. The Basement is a venue run by a group of performing artists who are committed to offering some of the
most exciting performance and art events in Auckland.
Two of New Zealand’s most successful graffiti artists Askew and Deus feature in Day Dreams Start Fires. Both are part of the TMD crew who recently won the world final of the 2008 Write4Gold graffiti champs in Germany.

Day Dreams Start Fires is collaboration between my poetry and the art of a dozen local artists. The idea came to me after one of my poems was
made into an A2 poster for Morph magazine. I began seeing the posters everywhere: peoples living rooms, cafes even a
couple on Facebook pages, and realized that there was real interest in poetry presented as art. I approached a dozen of
my favourite Auckland artists with the idea of an exhibition and a fistful of poems for them to choose from. As a poet I
take my experiences and surroundings and reshape them through language to present everyday life in a new light. This
concept of re-contextualization is further explored in Day Dreams Start Fires as the artists interrupt their own meaning from the poems.
The artists contributing to the exhibition come from a variety of disciplines from graffiti to graphic, design to pop
art, and more. There’s the colorful dream like works of world renowned artist Misery, who’s recent show at Webb’s
gallery was a huge success, the bold graff pieces of one of New Zealand’s most successful graffiti artists, Askew,
returning from winning the Write4Gold world graffiti champs in Germany, and the intricate stencil work of Cut Collective’s Component and Trust Me.
The show also features pieces from some of Auckland’s up and comers whose works are no less striking and immediate next
to the more experienced artists. It’s this sense of immediacy and passion that led me to choose the various artists for
the show. I think these talents are necessary for capturing the beauty and poignancy in everyday life, from restless
delirium watching late night news to the subtle complexities of communication.
The show is being held at The Basement, a venue run by a group of performing artists who are committed to offering some
of the most exciting performance and art events in Auckland. The Basement is the ideal space to exhibit Day Dreams Start Fires as the people running the venue are dedicated to getting behind events that are going to benefit Auckland’s creative
community. This is reflected in the exhibition, which gives less established artists a chance to raise there profile by
exhibiting alongside bigger names. Each artwork is also going to be made into A1 prints which will be for sale at an
affordable price, giving people the opportunity to purchase works who otherwise couldn’t afford to.

Hi I’m Tourettes,
I like rapping, poetry and playing the drums. I write about politics, love and diseases. I’m in a crew called Breakin

At the moment I’m finishing my new album “Who said you can’t dance to misery” in an effort to get the voices out of my
head and into yours.
