Media Release –THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA has opened to critical acclaim and due to overwhelming audience response the season has been extended with new seats now on sale.
“We are thrilled with the response from New Zealand audiences. It is wonderful for our cast to experience standing ovations from the very first performance, and it is also clear how much the audiences are enjoying it!” said John Frost, Co-Producer.
The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a disfigured musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talents and beauty of a young soprano - Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, The Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealously, madness and passions collide.
“The cast of The Phantom of the Opera is regarded as one of the best in the world. Producers from London who have seen the production say it is every bit as good or better than the current productions on Broadway and the West End. The cast includes some Kiwi performers too, who are incredibly excited to be home and performing in front of home audiences” said Mr Tim McFarlane, Co-Producer.
With spectacular sets and more than 230 costumes by international designer, the late Maria Björnson, The Phantom of the Opera contains some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous music, including ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘Music of the Night’.
“There is something in this show for everyone, timeless romance, a compelling story, comedy, fabulous music and lavish sets and if it’s the first or the fiftieth time someone has seen the show, this production is still as spectacular as ever and is an unforgettable experience” said Mr John Frost, Co-Producer.
The Phantom of the Opera has been seen by more than 80 million people in 124 cities around the world, and is acclaimed as being the most popular musical of all time.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical is based upon the novel Le Fantome De L’Opera by Gaston Leroux. Original London production by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Group. The Phantom of the Opera is presented in Australia by The Really Useful Company Asia Pacific and The Gordon/Frost Organisation.
