Surfing Safari With Te Hikoi Mahanga – On Maori Television!
Maori Television’s most fun-loving identical twins Te Kauhoe (TK) and Whare Wano are back for another surfing safari –
and converting some prominent locals to their surfing passion – in TE HIKOI MAHANGA, returning to screens from October
26 at 4.30 PM.
With summer around the corner, we could all do with some reminding of what it’s all about – sun, sand and surf, in what
must be some of the most beautiful spots in the world.
Now in its third season, the Taranaki mahanga (twins) are back on the road to hit the best surf spots in Aotearoa, and
to introduce some well-known New Zealanders to the sport they love. Among them are Tiki Taane, who quickly works out
he’s not just on the show to sing, and Outrageous Fortune’s Tammy Davis, who is bribed with a feed of muttonbirds to get
in the water.
Katie Wolfe and Tim Balme get the best deal, requiring the twins to do some work on their Mangawhai pad before they’ll
go anywhere near a surfboard. Other guests include some of this country’s best surfers, and for the first time, a jump
across the ditch yields some interesting time with well-known New Zealand sports stars.
Everywhere they go, the scenery seems more stunning than the last place, and the waves are glorious. East and west
coastlines are so close in one spot, they get to catch both in one day. Ahipara’s Shipwreck Bay is real highlight, then
it’s on to the Hokianga, Muriwai and Piha, and further south, and east, to Whitianga, Mt Maunganui, Hawkes Bay, and
Great Barrier.
“We score some classic summer waves, and the surfing is still off the hook,” says TK Wano (Taranaki, Te Atiawa, Ngati
Awa), who also produces the series. “But we also get into issues that affect some local beaches. We catch up with the
anti-marina camp in Whangamata, and we do our bit to help stop the destruction of the famous bar.”
It might not be the toughest assignment chasing around the country for the perfect wave, but someone has to do it, and
it seems the fun-loving twins drew the long straw. Share their adventures in TE HIKOI MAHANGA, on Maori Television from
