Keep New Zealand Beautiful Chooses
New Zealand’s Best Towns And The Best Loos 2008
KNZB has chosen this year’s winners in its Beautiful Towns and Cities Awards and its Best Loo Competition.
KNZB’s annual competitions have caught the imagination of both big and small town New Zealand, attracting entries from
across both islands.
Beautiful Towns and Cities
There were three finalists for category “C” (population greater than 20,000) – Rotorua City, Gisborne City and Dunedin
City. The judges say they were extremely impressed by the standard and presentation of all entries and in the end chose
Dunedin as the winner.
In category “B”, with a population of between 8,000 and 20,000, Keep Feilding Beautiful won. The other finalists in this
category were Keep Rangiora Beautiful and Keep Alexandra/Clyde Beautiful. Again the judges commended all entries for
their quality and work.
Small-town New Zealand, classed by KNZB as category “A”, towns with populations under 8,000, were again out in force
this year. The smaller the community, it seems, the greater the community pride. Judges say the small towns excelled
themselves again with entries from Keep Woodville Beautiful, Keep Rongatea Beautiful and Westport. The judges wanted to
create prizes for all of these entrants in this category but in the end declared Westport a narrow winner.
Keep New Zealand Beautiful recognises the sponsorship of Coca Cola Amatil for the Best Cities and Towns awards.
Best Loo Competition 2008
Keep New Zealand Beautiful was flushed with pride and entrants for the Best Loo Competition.
KNZB believes that since the reintroduction of the “Best Loos”, the standard of public toilets in New Zealand has
improved dramatically. This is reflected in the presentation of all of the entrants.
The “Best Loo” entrants came from a good geographical spread showing the idea has caught on around the country. Entrants
included: Waitakere City Council, Hurunui District Council, Horowhenua District Council, Whangarei District Council,
Upper Hutt City Council, Rotorua District Council, Ruapehu District Council, and Otorohanga Public Toilets.
The judges convinced the sponsors to split the prize money and create another trophy for the first-equal winners:
Hurunui District Council
Hawarden Public Toilets
Horowhenua District Council
Levin Adventure Park Toilets
Keep New Zealand Beautiful acknowledges the support and sponsorship of “Kiwi Loo” and The Environmental Endeavour
Company Ltd for the Best Loo Competition.
The recent resurgence of Keep New Zealand Beautiful has been highlighted by such awards as the Best Cities and Towns and
the Best Loo awards.
Organiser, Barry Lucinsky, says the competitions are fun to judge because entries come from communities who have pride
in their neighbourhood and they’re good people to deal with. “There’s nothing like dealing with a local body and its
citizens where a great place to live is seen as a priority, rather than some of the neglected neighbourhoods that some
areas have accepted as a part of life.”
Mr Lucinsky says enjoying where you live and taking a pride in its appearance benefits everyone and that’s why the
competitions are run.
