Queen of the Whole Universe - A VERY QUEER BEAUTY PAGEANT
An outrageously glamorous beauty pageant… with a difference
Tickets are in such hot demand for the 5th installment of Queen of the Whole Universe that they have nearly sold out – 2 Months prior to the event! Luckily for New Zealand audiences Queen of the Whole Universe will be travelling to Wellington in 2009 to paint the capital pink!
Having simultaneously raised over $100,000 for HIV/AIDS causes in New Zealand while entertaining audiences from all over New Zealand, Queen of the Whole Universe has become a truly must-see-event.
Not all of the cast are boys dressed as girls – young, old, gay and straight- every contestant has the same mission, to receive the coveted crown. Celebrity guest Alison Mau is the head judge for the evening, while the fabulous Buffy and Bimbo will be will hosting the festivities. The evening consists of two acts, more than 50 contestants, and a special performance from opera singer Helen Medlyn, with choreography by the renowned Taane Mete and Michael Sanders, this colourful night boasts laughter, creativity and entertainment.
Contestants will battle for prestige in the glamorous ‘Headgear of Nations’ before the announcements of the special awards and the semi-finalists who will compete for the overall title. The pageant continues long in to the night when the after event party kicks off and both the participants and audiences can mingle and celebrate working together for a great cause.
Queen of the Whole Universe raises funds for HIV /AIDS Charities including the New Zealand AIDS Foundation; and is committed to financially assisting important HIV/AIDS community advocacy work not funded by its Ministry of Health contracts. Since its 2004 premiere, Queen of the Whole Universe has been enthusiastically supported by sponsors, participants and audiences. We would like to make special mention of long-standing sponsors Durex, MSD, gayNZ.com, Cahill Real Estate and Paradigm for their incredible support over the years.
This year, to complement the pageant and to look back at the success of previous years, there will be a sensational photography exhibition in the Aotea Centre from 10-16 November. Images from rehearsals and backstage will be shown in black and white, while the on-stage action will be shown in vibrant colour images – to truly capture the technicolour experience! There will also be mind - blowing costumes and headgear on display and film footage from earlier years – a visual symphony for the eyes!
Don’t be a ‘diva’ and miss out on limited seating – The Auckland show has nearly sold out already!
