Fashion Week: Long live Jaeha Prince!

Jaeha Alex Kim demonstrated to a packed St Matthews in the City audience Wednesday morning that he is definitely not a one trick wonder…
Jaeha’s much awaited debut solo show was satisfyingly creative, perfectly styled show which also introduced a little Jaeha menswear.
“Call Me Princess, My Daddy Says So” is prettier than last winter – a dusky paisley mingled with coral, sherbet and light to mid blue, with lots of draped silky fabric and long black lace tight-bearing leg. Relatively light textures for a winter collection were practically and simply layered over black long sleeved tops.

Female models were ethereally tall, perched on what must have been 2” platforms (and that’s just the front of the shoe). Jaeha uses the whole body to excellent effect – he adorns heads, necks, ankles and everything in between. His clothing’s “confident sexuality” translates to a surprising androgyny and therefore, when he has an outfit reveal skin, the skin becomes another of his myriad textures.
We are already fan of Jaeha’s denim and his skin-tight zipped numbers looked amazing in colour – pale dusky pink. Man jeans also featured the signature zip treatment and were finished with wonderful customised Doc Martens – you wouldn’t believe what you get when you add a fringed over-anklet and a sprinkle of sequins! Drill man pants looked cool but won’t be for the fainthearted with their highlight zip on the fly.
Dip dying was used extensively as were highly textured knits, transmogrified from last winter by their whimsical colour. Admittedly there was a lot going on in some outfits but the designer - and one presumes stylist Dan Ahwa – used such a light touch that this did not overwhelm nor confuse.
Jaeha is so clearly having fun that it’s infectious – and a naked torsoed boy sporting a jumbo faux-wolf stole complete with head and paws wasn’t the least gimmicky – actually it was really funny.
In short – nothing more than a delight – Jaeha has brought an extra and wonderful element to NZ Fashion Week – we’ll call him Princess or whatever he wants us to!
