Lock Up Your Parents! AK79 Live : last chance!
Yes, the decades have just melted away with a punk heat blast – tickets for November 22nd’s celebration of old-school Auckland punk rock at the Monte Cristo Room have rapidly been snapped up, and the show is SOLD OUT.
Now, the second and absolutely final instalment: an extra show has been added AK79 Live on Friday 21st November at the Monte Cristo in Auckland city.
AK79 Live will reunite seminal NZ rockers Proud Scum, The Spelling Mistakes, X-Features, The Terrorways, and the Scavengers for the first time since the halcyon days of last century’s explosion of local punk rock colour. You can safely assume one thing about the 1970’s breed of Auckland punk rockers: the passing of time might have ensured they’ve grown older, but “growing up” is another thing entirely.
We should all be proud that The Terrorways are still causing headaches for the ‘establishment’ nearly thirty years after the band last played. No doubt about it, the band’s signature tune ‘Short Haired Rock’n’Roll’ is a stone cold classic, but somebody forgot to remind ‘sensible’ radio station ZB of the oh-so-naughty language at the end of the first verse. Consequently, listeners were only able to hear the first 25 seconds of this national heritage treasure before it was hastily whipped off, whereupon ZB retreated to the safety of advertisements…nothing to offend the sensibilities there, of course.
As for Proud Scum living up to their name -- Jonathan Jamrag recently told Mike Havoc on the 95bFM Breakfast show how much he was looking forward to AK79 Live, and how he intended to “spoof all over the place”. This was perhaps not meant to be taken literally, but maybe it’s force of habit -- just what was it that he wanted to do with that carrot in ‘I Am A Rabbit’?
AK79 Live will be a one-time only affair. The Scavengers – who reunited for a one-off show in Auckland in 2004 – will be returning from Australia where they have lived since departing New Zealand in 1978; the Spelling Mistakes have sporadically reformed over the years, but never to play with their Class of ‘79 peers; and while the recent discovery of an unreleased Features album suggests we will be hearing more of the group, it is unlikely that Jed Town’s X- Features will be reinvestigating the past to the point of playing again.
