Congratulations to Savage, whose single Swing (feat. Soulja Boy Tell’em) has hit half a million US sales from both digital downloads and ringtones – plus it’s #81 on the Billboard Hot 100
singles chart, #49 on the iTunes Hot 100 tracks chart and #14 on the iTunes Hip-Hop chart. Savage and the boys have been
on the road over the past couple of weeks, in the Midwest with Keri Hilson and Pretty Ricky, as well as Hawaii. Beat Kamp Muzik, founded by platinum producer A.T.P (originally from South Auckland, now based in Australia’s Gold Coast),have signed an exclusive deal with Dawn Raid
Music to release their debut single Rap Game featuring ATP, Savage, MZRE, PNC, XY & OP.
APRA has announced the 5 finalists for the APRA Silver Scroll Award, as selected by the APRA members; nominees from the
IMNZ whanau are Jason Kerrison, Bobby Kennedy, Matt Treacy and Clinton Harris (Opshop) for One Day. Also the countdown to the 2008 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards has begun with nominations for Tiki Taane (6 nominations), Flight of the Conchords (3), Scribe (2), Opshop, Horsemen Family, Parachute Band, SJD, Aaradhna, Annabel Fay, Nesian Mystik, the Brunettes, Mareko, Young Sid, Kora,
Magik Johnson, Recloose, Shapeshifter, Moana and the Tribe, Ruia, Michael Houston and NZTrio all from team IMNZ.
Speaking of Tiki, on August 5 his track Always On My Mind, distributed digitally by DRM NZ, became the first New Zealand single to achieve platinum sales (15,000 copies) via a
digital-only release. The song also hit the # 1 airplay spot in the country and has racked up over 280,000 hits on
Youtube to date. Rebecca Caughey of Funktion Music has been awarded a Sir Peter Blake Emerging Leader Award along with 5 other young leaders including Oscar Kightley and Sarah Ulmer; at the same ceremony, Olympic gold medal athlete Sir Murray Halberg was awarded the Blake Medal for his dedicated service to athletics and children with disabilities. . In the first week
of August Nesian Mystik hit the number one spot on the NZ Singles Chart with their new single Nesian 101, which is fresh off the boat from their forthcoming album. While on tour overseas and slightly homesick, the boys
decided to produce a song which answered the oft-asked question “What’s the meaning of ‘Nesian Style’?”, and thus Nesian 101 was born.
2008 has been a great year so far for Te Vaka, with two New Zealand awards already under their belt and now Tamahana, written by Opetaia Foai and Malcolm Smith, has won the International category in the prestigious 28th Australian Songwriting Association Awards, where the
winners of the 12 categories performed their winning songs to a sold-out venue of music industry personnel and
Australian celebrities. Te Vaka's performance of Tamahana on the night also won the group the PPCA Best live Performance of the Night Award presented by Mondo Rock’s bass player Paul Christie.
This weekend saw the celebration of 20 years of Smokefreerockquest; in addition to the finals held on Friday was the
Smokefreerockquest Retro Show on Saturday, which brought together some of the acts who have kicked off their careers
with the quest. Musical successes from Smokefreerockquest over its 20 year history include Die!Die!Die!, the Datsuns, Flight of the Conchords, So So Modern, Steriogram, Fat Freddys Drop, Aaradhna, The Black
Seeds, Nesian Mystik, The Have, Fur Patrol and Pine. Performers at the anniversary show included Opshop, Minuit, Autozamm and Anna Coddington. Also to celebrate their 20th Anniversary, Smokefreerockquest are releasing ‘Melodies, Moshpits, and Mullets - 20 years
of Smokefreerockquest, a double CD featuring from the IMNZ whanau The Datsuns, Steriogram, Fur Patrol, Sommerset, Die! Die! Die! and many more.
Christchurch’s ((CHART)) in the weekend presented a songwriting session which featured IMNZ songwriters Jason Kerrison (OpShop), Ruth Carr (Minuit) and Jody Lloyd (Trillion). Following that, Jody headseddown to Al's Bar to perform along side some of his She'll Be Right pals at the launch of
their new CD ‘The Original Branch Manual – Catalyst 7’, which features poets and musicians including Andy Gibson (Auckland), John White (Dunedin), Tono (Dunedin), Trillion, Demarnia Lloyd (cloudboy), Lindon Puffin and Le Mot Café.
The Brunettes have finished their 3 and a half month tour and are now working on their 4th album, as well as recording a cover of the Cure song Love Song for a tribute album, due for release early next year. Die! Die! Die! are home in November once they’ve played their part in the CMJ festival. Their single ‘Sideways Here We Come/People
Talk’was released by Too Pure records as part of their exclusive singles’ club releases, and this was recently picked as
single of the week by Artrocker magazine. Their album ‘Promises, Promises’ is out in Europe on October 6. Collapsing Cities have been named as one of ’10 Hopes of the Near Future’ in NME magazine following their performance at Reading
Festival.
Minisnap’s latest album ‘Bounce Around’ picked up a 4-star review in the UK’s Sunday Times (April 20). And the very legendary Dead C are about to embark on a US tour in support of their new album ‘Secret Earth’, taking along some of the USA’s leading
noise merchants, including Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore as well as Wolf Eyes, Sightings and more. Alan McGee, founder of Creation records, who signed Oasis and managed the Libertines, explained his fondness for the Chills and noted their influence on many new artists in his blog on guardian.co.uk at the beginning of August; you can find
their most recent EP at Dunedinmusic.com.
Scribe recently performed to a packed out tent at Splendour in the Grass in Byron Bay over in Australia, and then headed back
there at the end of August to perform shows during Snow Week and at the Time Out Festival in Cairns. He also performed
with Supergroove and Hollie Smith as part of the Crosstown Review and at the Smokefree Pacific Beats Finals in Auckland. And while Hollie Smith may not be a name Australian music fans know well, the soul songstress plans to change that as she heads away on a
seven-stop debut tour. Smith has already toured Europe and North America following the initial release of ‘Long Player’;
the album is multi-platinum at home and was made available to Australian fans in April of this year. The tour opens in
Cronulla on September 10 before moving onto Manly (11th), Katoomba (12th), Newtown (14th), Brisbane (18th), Coolum
(19th), and finally onto Melbourne on the 21st. Smith is accompanied by her three-piece band comprising Tyson Smith, Crete Haami and Darren Mathiassen.
Antagonist - now known as Antagonist A.D. - release their sophomore album ‘We are The Dead’ on October 6th simultaneously in Australia and New Zealand. September
sees Antagonist A.D on the road with Australians Carpathian and October sees them tour with Parkway Drive before returning to Australia for a national headlining tour in November. September also heralds new material from Cobra Khan, with the first single Shutter from the forthcoming album 'Helgorithms' hitting the airwaves.
In anticipation of Fur Patrol's third long player ‘Local Kid’ the Melbourne based three-piece popped back across the Tasman to play a select few shows
in support of the new record, which will be released on September 22nd and features the singles Great Leap Forward and Hidden Agenda. Good news for the alternative/acoustic/experimental fan: Skallander, the sonic bridge between Wellington and Hungary return, with duo Bevan Smith (aka Signer) and jazz guitarist Matthew Mitchell following on from their critically-acclaimed debut ‘The Camels’ with their new self-titled album ‘Skallander’. And
After 15 years of musical absence Steve Abel returned to London to play a show on August 17.
He's spent over fifteen years as one of the most in-demand and popular producers in New Zealand's flourishing
electronica scene, releasing six acclaimed albums, touring the globe and honing one of the most unmissable live
performance acts in the country - and now it's time to move on. The Nomad says haere ra to Aotearoa with the Walkabout tour in September/October 2008 before relocating to Australia. And OG is preparing for a series of live band shows, and his new album ‘Moving On’ is being released in Australia on September
13. O.G and MC KP (fresh from touring with Shapeshifter) and Switch (Sunshine Sound System) will be heading to Australia to pave the way for the album release with a series of shows.
In Powertool news, US artist Azalia goes on tour in October with Dunedin legend Sandra Bell, who has just released her album ‘White Nights’, written mostly in Berlin where she lived for much of this decade. To
record the album she recruited an array of guests, including a group of Russian musicians on Balalaika and accordian, Johaannes Contag on drums, Heath Te Au (Suka, Cloudboy, Heka), John White (Mestar) and Ian Henderson (the Puddle). Ex-Sneaky Feeling Matthew Bannister has shows lined up to promote his album ‘Aroha Ave’, released under his new moniker The Weather. Also out is ‘Bulletholes 3: The Best Is Yet To Come’, the long awaited third edition in the Bulletholes compilation
series, featuring past and present Powertool artists and friends including The Puddle, Bill Direen, Robert Scott and more. Otis Mace's new EP ‘Two Black Cats’ is out now, as is the 4th single in the 'Singles Going Steady Series', which is a double A-Side
mini-CD tour single featuring Greg Franco (US) and Otis Mace; and the 3rd single from 'Singles Going Steady' also features Otis - it's a vinyl double A-Side
split with Aussie band Green Circles, and is Powertool’s first vinyl release.
Multi-instrumentalist Bond Street Bridge aka Sam Prebble is releasing his debut album 'The Mapmaker's Art' on Sep 15th. Sam also plays in the Broken Heartbreakers and Reb Fountain's band and will be touring the country with Reb in October. On the 20th September, Monkey Records celebrates their 8th
birthday with a big night across two venues, The Wine Cellar and the Whammy Bar in Auckland, featuring The Hot Grits, The Benka Boradovsky Bordello Band, Renee-Louise Carafice, Tim Guy, Bond Street Bridge, DJ Balkanetic and special mystery guests; there’s a free CD for the first 100 people through the door. The Hot Grits have had their first music video Headlights (from their album 'It's too Drunk to be this Early') banned by TVNZ. The clip features a cast of four-year-old kids
simulating an adult night out on the town, drinking milk, to demonstrate the child-like greed with which adults conduct
themselves whilst on the road to excess. The TVNZ censor is reported to have said that it was inappropriate to show
children drinking from a funnel and from shots, and that the general behaviour of the children was unacceptable. This is
the first New Zealand-made music video to be banned by TVNZ since the Skeptics’ 1988 clip A.F.F.C.O, which filmed the journey of sheep through an abattoir in graphic detail. Monkey Records label boss Nigel Braddock is heading over to Popkomm in Berlin in early October to line up European distribution for the label and to investigate
licensing and touring opportunities for acts on his roster.
Over the Atlantic and Blink have been on tour over four months and 8 countries; now you can welcome them back at Bodega tonight at the first A Low
Hum show of 2008. Pacific Curls have just come back from a successful 6-week tour of Canada and are now booked into some major festivals there next
year; they head away to tour Australia in 2 weeks for a 6-week stint, and are back to play Pao, Pao, Pao in Wellington
at the town hall on the 29th of October – basically, the group are solidly booked right up to the middle of 2010!
Dunedin’s Tweeks are playing their last shows before leaving for London in October; you can catch their last gig in New Zealand at The
Backstage, Dunedin on September 26.
Last month Jayrem released two albums from ‘New Zealand Poets: The Laureate Series’, by previous laureates Bill Manhire and Jenny Bornholdt. Manhire was the inaugural Poet Laureate in 1996/97 and he directs the now famous creative writing programme at
Victoria University of Wellington. Bornholdt has written seven books of poetry, was Poet Laureate in 2005/06 and she has
previously held the Katherine Mansfield Memorial Scholarship. These collections were recorded, mixed and mastered by Robbie Duncan at Braeburn Studio.
Everything, the new single from P-Money, is a change of pace for the renowned producer and DJ, with influences from 90's dance music, 80's pop and of course
new and classic Hip-Hop added to the mix. Lead vocals are performed by newcomer Vince Harder, an R/soul/pop songwriter and vocalist who has previously spent a couple of years in Australia pursuing a performing arts
career, landing the lead role of 'Simba' in The Lion King stage production. Whirimako Black, Richard Nunns and Paddy Free, all from the IMNZ whanau, have contributed to the aptly-named album ‘Feel the Seasons Change’, a collaboration between Salmonella Dub and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra due out on September 22.
From Round Trip Mars, first out of the blocks is the nextness from The Naked And Famous, the 6-track ‘No Light’ EP. The blast off release date is September 8th (today!) with a launch at the Rising Sun on K
Road on Thursday September 11 also featuring James Duncan and Stinky Jim warming the bench. Meanwhile out in the wilds of West Auckland, Sean Donnelly has been making himself a righteously robust fifth SJD album, ‘Dayglo Spectres’, due out October 6th.
Arch Hill presents White Swan Black Swan – who are not one, but neither are they two…This double mini album features White Swan Sonya Waters penning the songs on one disc and Black Swan Ben Howe on the other. Waters started her career in legendary AK punk band The Instigators, writing the ‘80s classic Hope She’s Alright, before moving abroad to play in bands in London (The Woodentops, ICU) and San Francisco (her own band Orange). Howe has played in various bands, including Flying Nun favourites Superette, and both Swans previously played in Fang. The band also features Rick McShane and Ben Furniss, and the record is mixed by Mark Nevers (Lambchop, Calexico, Will Oldham, David Kilgour). The swans have toured with the likes of David Kilgour and The Spoils, they’ve played alongside notables such as The Handsome Family, Kelley Stoltz and Samuel F. Scott, and they have a nationwide October tour planned.
Frank Gibson would most arguably be New Zealand’s best known drummer. During the 70’s and 80’s when many overseas jazz acts visited
our shores, Frank along with Andy Brown, Murray McNabb and Phil Broadhurst, were often the core rhythm section, and ‘Parallel 37’ is the document from those days being released by Ode Records.
The album was originally released in 1982 and in addition to appearances by Milt Jackson, Steve Erquiaga and Bobby Shew is included Emily Remler’s final recording before her untimely death at age 33 a few weeks after the session. Ode is also releasing a collection
from blues rock legend Sonny Day, who passed away in August 2007. Throughout the early 60’s his band The Sundowners recorded a string of singles and an EP for both Viking Records and Zodiac Records, and they toured New Zealand and
Australia. In the ‘70s Sonny played at a series of Johnny Tabla clubs and at decade’s end he teamed up with Midge Marsden’s Kiwi Connection. The fifteen tracks on this CD are pretty much all that was released by Sonny Day but on the live circuit he was a
giant. And 20 years after they were last in a studio together, The Ponsonby DCs have returned with a triumphant collection of their trademark quirky/insightful songs entitled ‘That’s What All the
Girls Say’; and the line-up is the same except for the addition of vocalist Pete Evans who co-wrote some of the material with front man Gavin Buxton.
The Black Seeds have just released their fourth album ‘Solid Ground’ via Rhythmethod. Joined for the first time on an album by Andrew Christiansen (trumpet) and Nigel Patterson (keys), ‘Solid Ground’ follows 2 years of extensive NZ and international touring. The album is released simultaneously
in Europe through Sonar Kollektiv, and will be out in the US in October. The band have just completed a 23-date European
tour, which included performances at some massive European festivals such as Roskilde, The Lovebox Weekender, The
Summerjam, Splash and Garance Festivals and the Rip Curl.
On the back of their first bNet hit Weapon of Parnell - “a tale of rohypnol and TV presenters” that was number one on the 95bFM Top Ten for a month – AK-electrogrungists Brand New Math have released an EP, ‘Moustache Party’. Named after 1) the parties held last month in Auckland and Wellington 2) the
band’s attempts to become men and 3) the Nineteenth Century Men of Science they admire. ‘How to Knit a Pony’ is the
fourth album from Hamilton band The Shrugs. The recording took longer than the usual Shrugs album (18 months as opposed to 6 months) due to members being in other
bands, having kids, partying, watching TV... and partially it’s because the album is pretty long and The Shrugs are not
prepared to relinquish their DIY ethic just yet. And fellow Hamiltonians Dynamo Go think that their city is a great place for people watching - it's just small enough that the people still wear their
small-town eccentricities on their sleeves, but just big enough that you can remain anonymous while you watch them. The
band uses a sort of magical-realist songwriting approach shared, in various ways, by bands like the Gills, the Deadly Deaths, The Shrugs and the Dead Pan Rangers.
After a 5 year hiatus, Pacific Heights (aka Devin Abrams of Shapeshifter/DJ Reno) returns with a second album, ‘In A Quiet Storm’, and a national tour. The album features some of New Zealand's
favourite vocalists - Joe Dukie, Pdigsss, Ladi6 and Lisa Tomlins – and introduces the exciting new vocal talents of Christchurch's Mara TK, jdubs, Aeries, Mark Vanilau and Sacha Vee. Bringing this album to the live stage along with Abrams (and his alter ego DJ Reno) will be Pdigsss (Shapeshifter), Joe Dukie (Fat Freddy's Drop) and Lisa Tomlins (Rhombus). Speaking of Shapeshifter, they’re releasing ‘Shapeshifter Live’ through Inertia in Australia, and are playing there this week. They also have a
series of seven summer shows already lined up for December and January; tickets go on sale this week, on September 11.
Missing Teeth play their final show ever after 9-and-a-half years on September 13 at the Kings Arms. Deth Becomes Shane releases their debut album on Puppy Killer Records on 15th September via Rhythmethod with a release show at The Thirsty
Dog on Sept 20th - the band features members of Missing Teeth, The Managers, Hilt and Roofdog, MFT Records are proud to announce that Tainted are releasing their album ‘Carved and Created’ on October 6. They’ll be holding an album release in Christchurch on
October 19th which will be all ages at the Civic, where they will also be supporting Parkway Drive. Tainted have also secured a call back to perform at Southern Amp this year, and the band will be playing around New
Zealand in November to support the album release.
Raggamuffin is back in February 2009 at Rotorua International Stadium, with locals Kora, Three Houses Down and Unity Pacific are joining international stars such as Ziggy Marley, Eddy Grant, Stephen Marley, Shaggy, Arrested Development and Inner Circle. And Border Music has announced that the platinum-selling debut EP from Kora, ‘EP Volume’, is once again available to fans. House of Shem are touring all the way through to 2009 in support of their debut album 'Keep Rising', with a spot at Rhythm and Vines
already locked in. dDub have released the second single from their new album ‘Medicine Man’, entitled Making My Way Home. Just back from huge gigs at the Queenstown and Nelson Winter Festivals, dDub are about to launch the re-package of
‘Medicine Man’ with a bonus DVD, and in traditional dDub fashion they will tour nationally.
Ladies and gentlemen, get ready to rumble as the third MPC Championship of the World returns to the ring. In the world’s
only official MPC battle, an all-star line of musicians and DJs will compete at Bodega, Wellington on 25 September in an
attempt to clinch the supreme title. Leading competitors for the showdown are Captain Imon Starr, 2002 defending champion, and DJ Mu, the winner of the original title in 2001 who has gone on to incorporate the MPC as the heartbeat of Fat Freddy’s Drop. Amongst those also joining the fray are Riki Gooch, Rio (both ex-TrinityRoots), Julien Dyne (Opensouls) and P-Money.
Dub Asylum (a.k.a. Peter McLennan of the legendary Hallelujah Picassos) returns from the wilderness with five songs which mix up dub, ska, hip-hop and down-tempo. The EP serves as a taster
of the second Dub Asylum album (the follow-up to 'She Dubs Me, She Dubs Me Not’ from 2002), due to drop at the end of the year, and features
guests such as MC Kyla, the WBC Horns and songstress Sandy Mill. Recliner’s new album ‘The Orchid Door’ is nearly complete, and the first single Lonely Girl will be licking the airwaves soon. 4DG (4 Da Grind) are a group about to hit the airwaves with the new pacific sound of their track What Makes. With Maori, Samoan, Tongan, American, Jewish and even a little French blood running through their veins, their
combined experience includes co-writing the popular Nesian Girl which was first released through some of the band's involvement with Element X.
New Zealand Post, in association with LOOP, has recorded and released the studio single of the winning poem from the
best lyric category in New Zealand Post National Schools Poetry Awards 2008. Samuel Flynn Scott, (Phoenix Foundation, Fly My Pretties), has recorded a song from the winning poem Mrs. Potts by Sonya Clark, aged 16, from Karamu High School, Hawkes Bay. This month alongside a new studio album Rapture Ruckus is releasing a ‘Live at Mystery Creek’ DVD/EP featuring his Parachute 08 Mainstage performance and brand new songs.
A 12” of Recloose’s track Deeper Waters featuring Joe Dukie (taken from his recently-released ‘Perfect Timing’ album) is out now and comes complete with remixes from Best Seven’s Frost & Wagner alongside Yes King aka Rhys Adams/Mark Rae, plus a sizzling live version of Turkish Delight (originally from ‘Hiatus On The Horizon’). Charlie B aka Optimus Gryme is a self-taught producer who has been on the scene for the last 10 years, mainly in the drum and bass arena. His debut
4-track EP, ‘Annihilation of the Ego’, spans 4 aspects of the dubstep spectrum, and includes the track Immortal which was written for the Music for Mauis organisation, and features authentic samples from Maui dolphins.
The Pumphouse relaunch week kicks off on October 14 and offers nightly performances from leading musicians including Nathan Haines, Goldenhorse and Don McGlashan. NZTrio’s September national tour ‘Beyond the Pale’ takes audiences in six centres on a journey into musical extremes, from the
classical charm of Beethoven to the sonic sensations of New Zealand’s Phil Dadson. Dunedin trio Delgirl begins a massive 29-date tour throughout New Zealand at the end of August. With support from Creative New Zealand, the
band will bring their unique blend of folk/swamp/roots music to a town near just about everyone; this talented group of
women weaves tight harmonies around the double bass, guitar, banjo, ukulele and percussion, in songs about love, murder,
lonesome livestock and road rage.
Coco Solid follows up her critically-acclaimed double album ‘The Radical Bad Attack’ with an underground vinyl pressing, due for
release this month. The limited edition 12” Graffiti Girls For Life will feature nine tracks from her chart-hitting June release - pressed in pink and complete with special edition
instrumentals, this is set to be a collector’s item for fans of the group. It will be released on September 17 at the
aptly-named Coco’s Bar in Auckland. Following the release, Coco heads to Barcelona after being accepted into the
prestigious Red Bull Music Academy 2008 - the academy is host to 60 musicians from all around the world and is a chance
for Coco to expand on her international collaborations. And New Zealand electropop pioneers originators Car Crash Set have some tasty slabs of vinyl available from German label Anna Logue Records; the album includes tracks from their
1983 12" 'Two Songs' and other rarities, plus four previously unavailable demos from both their earliest and later days.
