Internet Viewing A Tera Hit For Tvnz Olympic Fans
Kiwis, glued to their computers to see key Olympic events, have created record volumes of downloads from the internet, says Neil de Wit CEO of CityLink, the NZ the broadband and fibre company that assisted TVNZ in providing live internet coverage of the Olympics.
Mr De Wit says the volume of Olympic downloads has been staggering.
“We think it’s the most data downloaded for a single event in NZ history.”
“Watching Olympic coverage via the TVNZ website peaked on Tuesday at 3:40pm, coinciding with the time the men’s triathlon finished, and when NZ went up against Germany in the men’s hockey.
"TVNZ Olympic coverage via the StreamingNet content delivery network
peaked on Tuesday at 3:40pm, coinciding with the finish of the men's triathlon, and when NZ went up against Germany in the men's hockey. At that time we hit a peak output of 5.2Gb/s of data. Average daily peaks over the fortnight were 1.5-2Gb/s, with a few over 4Gb/s"
Overall 95 terabytes of data were moved from the start of the games up until Friday morning.
“That’s equivalent to 5000 people using a 20Gb monthly data plan in one week.
"CityLink engineered for significantly more peak capacity, with the CDN
capable of delivering 10-15 Gb/s, clearly data traffic caps mean that
users have been picking and choosing what they watched and when, rather
than leaving the online coverage running 18 hours a day."
“CityLink is proud to have been able to assist TVNZ in bringing Olympic viewing via the internet to all New Zealanders. says Mr De Wit.
