LOST AT SEA
Paintings and drawings by Kathryn Bates
Living above the Avon-Heathcote estuary in Christchurch provides the inspiration for these paintings. Every day I passed through it and more and more I started to notice the birds. One day, when I finally stopped, I felt like I had discovered a new world on my doorstep, and noticed how strange it was to have stopped. There was so much nature just going on while the cars whistled by! I noticed how no one in their cars looked beyond the road. How I must have annoyed many people in the days before I stopped because I was slowing down to look at the birds, the tides, the light on the water, and probably because I was driving erratically…
A long time coming, this is Kathryn’s first solo exhibition, and her first foray into painting.
