Napier’s Art deco festival best rated of NZ events
So what is the best festival event in New Zealand? Some may say the World of Wearable Arts event, others say the World Buskers Festival but Lonely Planet rates Napier’s Art Deco weekend the best.
Lonely Planet has just released the Year of Festivals – a guide to having the time of your life.
Four annual New Zealand events are mentioned. They are the Wildfoods Festival in Hokitika, the World Buskers festival in Christchurch, the art deco weekend and the Golden Shears in Masterton.
The art deco event is the only festival that is fully mentioned and highlighted in the guide. It says the four day weekend is Napier’s big moment in the art deco sun.
``It’s a time where everyone is thinking ziggurats and jazz, and when there is enough fur trim and bow ties to make Al Capone smile. Napier is art deco obsessed, complete with an employed art deco ambassador.’’
The guide says the Christchurch Buskers festival is a 10-day event of the world’s best street performers. Of the Golden shears, the book says with four million people and 40 million sheep it’s only right there should be a shearing festival.
The Wildfoods in Hokitika is described as a bush cook-up that might have you eating huhu grubs, fish eyes or cicada and pistachio ice cream.
