Adam Art Gallery forum series underway this week
This Saturday 16 August the Adam Art Gallery presents the first of three forum discussions associated with its current
exhibition The Subject Now. This forum will explore the idea of ‘online subjectivity’.
The Adam Art Gallery’s current exhibition The Subject Now brings together nine artists working in various locations who
pose new and compelling questions about the nature of the human subject under present conditions. The Subject Now forum
series expands on the artistic, theoretical and political implications of the exhibition, to broaden the discussion of
what it means to be a ‘subject now’, bringing together a range of commentators working in different fields to debate key
issues shaping our social, cultural, political and technological landscapes.

The emergence and integration into daily life of computer-mediated communication has presented both problems and
possibilities for all who have access to it, but what are the consequences of these modes of communication for our sense
of ourselves as individuals and as social beings? Have new media technologies produced new notions of the subject as
diffused, distributed, elusive? What new opportunities are there to ‘perform’ the self in an arena that is at once both
instantaneously public and yet also intensely private? These questions will be addressed by scholars and an artist who
are fascinated by the new on-line environment as a space for the production of subjectivity and for the creation of new
communities.
Daniel Agnihotri-Clark (aka Dan Untitled) is an artist, curator, musician and writer based in Wellington. His creative
practice explores the intersection between art and technology, traversing the disciplines of video, sound, sculpture,
installation, live performance, web-based media and robotics. His projects and research have reached online audiences
worldwide, and proximal audiences in New Zealand, London, Berlin, Barcelona and Melbourne. He is in the final year of a
doctorate in Fine Arts at Massey University, where he has also worked as tutor and web forum coordinator. His
presentation will include remote participants, artists Vicki Smith and Tara Rebele.
Anita Brady is a Lecturer in Media Studies at Victoria University of Wellington. She teaches and researches in the areas
of sexuality, gender, commodity culture, and new media. Her work in new media is primarily concerned with the
possibilities and limits of new technology for re-imagining subjectivity in ways that might function politically as
“queer.” Anita is currently working with Tony Schirato on a book that examines the work of the philosopher and queer
theorist, Judith Butler.
Dr Lalita Rajasingham is Associate Professor in Communications in the School of Information Management at Victoria
University of Wellington. Her area of research and teaching is in the application of information technology to human
resource development, particularly to education. She is widely published internationally and has presented several
keynote addresses and plenary papers at national and international conferences. Her co-authored internationally
acclaimed books titled In Search of the Virtual Class: Education in an Information Society and The Global Virtual
University have helped to pioneer future directions in education and are believed to have seeded the development of
virtual universities, virtual schools and virtual learning on the Internet.
Geoff Stahl is a Lecturer in Media Studies at Victoria University of Wellington. His research includes the study of
scenes, subcultures and urban culture. He has written on sub-cultural life in Berlin and Montreal, and is currently
writing a book on both cities and their bohemian pedigrees. He occasionally DJs under the moniker TV DiSKO.
