Wellington East Girls' College
Final Year Students
1.00 - 5.00pm daily 12 - 17 August.
Playing with a range of ideas, materials, options and difficulties makes for a fresh and engaging series of new work in
reSOLVE. Offering an exploratory approach to recent practice, the young contributors pull together ideas and techniques
that challenge and engage them in a variety of disciplines, ranging from photography and painting to design and
sculpture. Each work is part of a body of three, investigating the notion of play, experimentation and extension. The
creators approach the production of work as a process involving methods and strategies not unlike an ongoing exercise in
puzzle-solving

LOST AT SEA
Paintings and drawings by Kathryn Bates
Living above the Avon-Heathcote estuary in Christchurch provides the inspiration for these paintings. Every day I passed
through it and more and more I started to notice the birds. One day, when I finally stopped, I felt like I had
discovered a new world on my doorstep, and noticed how strange it was to have stopped. There was so much nature just
going on while the cars whistled by! I noticed how no one in their cars looked beyond the road. How I must have annoyed
many people in the days before I stopped because I was slowing down to look at the birds, the tides, the light on the
water, and probably because I was driving erratically…
A long time coming, this is Kathryn’s first solo exhibition, and her first foray into painting.
