2008 ISAF Youth Worlds Day Three

The Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships has reached the half way point with day three of racing completed
overnight in Arhus, Denmark. The kiwi team stepped up a notch most improving on their overall standings.
Cushla Hume-Merry was the big mover of the day lifting from 4th overall up to sit in 2nd place in the Laser Radial
class, behind arch rival Gabrielle King of Australia. Hume-Merry was 3rd and 4th in the two races sailed on day three
her climb up the ranks aided by the introduction of the first discard. King is in top however, adding two bullets to her
scorecard last night she is six points clear of the New Zealander at the regattas mid way point.
On the Laser course, the Cyprian sailor Pavlos Kontides continues to dominate, adding another two race wins to his near
perfect score card. Sam Meech from New Zealand however continues to keep his medal hopes alive with strong results
overnight; he now lies in 4th place over all just two points off 2nd place.
“There is bound to be some hill climbs yet,” said Team Leader, Rohan Lord, “but so far we are pretty happy with the
performance on whole.”
Josh Nixon has continued his climb up the leader board in the Boys RS:X windsurfing after the disappointment of gear
failure with the supplied equipment on day one costing him two races. On day one a broken fin was unable to be replaced
until the conclusion of racing and Nixon had to sit out the first two races. On day three Nixon was 5th and 6th putting
Nixon in 14th overall.
“While the gear breakage was certainly a set back for Josh, the mood is still positive. We are hopeful that he will have
an opportunity to demonstrate his true potential during the remainder of the racing,” Coach Matt McCormick said.
Jazmine Lynch, representing New Zealand in the Girls RS:X windsurfing retains her place in 9th overall after placing
12th and 13th on day three.
Strong, shifty conditions prevailed once again over the orange course where racing for the double-handed 29ers took
place. Paul Snow-Hansen and Ben Goodwin competing in the Boy’s 29er were 7th, 2nd and 8th in the three races sailed last
night which sees them climb two places up the leader board into 4th overall. In the girl’s division Alexandra Maloney
and Bianca Barbarich-Bacher were 1st, 9th and 4th which sees them retain 5th overall.
“Despite having just ten weeks of catamaran sailing experience the pairing of Francisco Lardies and David Hazard
demonstrated their potential today by leading both of their heats at times,” reports Marty Watson, Yachting New Zealand
High Performance and Youth Director. “Lardies and Hazard had their career best results today when they added a 2nd and a
4th in the two races sailed. With five races remaining they are still with a chance of a top three finish should their
form continue to improve”
Sailors will now enjoy a rest day in Arhus, Denmark before racing resumes with three days of racing left on the
schedule.
