New Zealanders live in a hazard zone and we are constantly reminded of the threat from natural disasters, earthquakes, tsunami, volcanoes, storms and floods. But just how prepared are we if a disaster strikes tomorrow?
While international events like Hurricane Katrina and the Boxing Day Tsunami are sobering lessons for our emergency planners, they should also be wake up calls for all of us who rely on the basic infrastructure around us to survive.
When The Siren Goes, a new six-part radio series from Radio New Zealand National, explores our level of disaster awareness and considers the public response that would follow a major civil defence emergency.
The series, prepared and produced by highly-experienced radio and television producer, Jerome Cvitanovich, takes the listener out and about around the country, looking at evidence of current hazards and interviewing those involved in natural disasters in recent years.
A feature of the series is some unique archival audio from Radio New Zealand Sound Archives, including remarkable recollections from a witness to the Mount Tarawera eruption of 1886, recorded 70 years after the event.
In addition to the radio broadcasts, all audio will be available on demand and as podcasts from a special section of the Radio New Zealand website: www.radionz.co.nz/civildefence
The web section will be live from the date of the first broadcast on Friday 11th July and features additional archival audio, visual information including photos and video clips, and a range of links to local and international web resources.
When The Siren Goes is a series of programmes produced and broadcast as a public value partnership between Radio New Zealand and the Department of Civil Defence and Emergency Management.
Radio New Zealand, is a designated lifeline utility organisation, responsible for the broadcast of emergency warnings and public information in the event of a civil defence emergency.
