Mountain Warrior Takes On The Big Dog - On Maori Television!
It's not quite 'we will fight them on the beaches', but at least there will be some salt spray. Shane "Mountain Warrior"
Cameron will hold his last sparring session before his upcoming fight against Kevin "Big Dog" Montiy in a
specially-erected marquee on Wellington's waterfront, on Friday June 20 at 2 PM.
Regular sparring partner Moyoyo "Midnight" Mensah will be putting Cameron through his paces for the last time before the
big fight the following Saturday at TSB Arena.
Maori Television will screen the fight live and free-to-air in CAMERON'S CAPITAL PUNISHMENT on Saturday June 28 at 8.00
PM.
Cameron's manager, Ken Reinsfield, originally hoped to open the sparring session, outside the Dockside Restaurant, to
the public, but has had to scrap that idea in favour of an invite list because interest has been so high. He says all
but a few of the tables at the TSB Arena have sold out.
Meanwhile, Cameron is looking to be in good shape physically and mentally.
"At this stage he's back in the world rankings - 15th in the world - on top of being the highest-ranked heavyweight in
New Zealand," says Reinsfield. "He can't wait to get in the ring."
American Montiy is considered a worthwhile opponent, a battle warrior in similar vein to Cameron. He has fought some
well-known names including Michael Grant and Kevin McBride - the behemoth Irishman many credit as putting the nail in
the coffin of Mike Tyson's career.
His numbers don't stack up to the Mountain Warrior's - Cameron has only lost one of 20 fights, 18 by KO, compared to
Montiy's 17 wins for four losses and a draw.
But add to his experience his size - 6'5" and 110kg - and he is likely to be a tougher opponent than Andre Purlette, the
fighter who had been lined up to fight in Wellington, but was sacked after his camp failed to stay in touch with
Cameron's.
Cameron is also putting his money where his mouth is on this one, with the decision to put up for grabs two of his
titles - the WBO Oriental and IBF Pan Pacific - in what's known as a voluntary defence of those belts.
"This guy's a big guy. He's fought some good guys and he's looking forward to coming down and fighting for the titles."
