Mark Brown takes Supreme Award
The $2.5 million dollar Johnnie Walker Classic Champion Mark Brown is the Dominion Post Wellington Sportsperson of the Year for 2008. For Brown the 2007/2008 season has been one that most golfers can only dream of. Brown also has taken out the Tui Sportsman of the Year Award to top off a great year for the Wellington Golfer.
Due to his golfing commitments overseas, Brown was unable to attend the night’s awards diner at the Wellington Town Hall. Brown’s coach, Mal Tongue a finalist himself for Coach of the Year, accepted the trophies on his behalf. In a pre-recorded interview with Radio Sports Graeme Moody, Brown acknowledged the support from his coach and family over the years.
The top award for women, the Westfield Queensgate Sportswoman of the Year, went to swimming and surf life saving’s Natasha Hind. Hind’s list of accomplishments in the past year is one that she can be very proud of. In addition to numerous local and regional titles, Hind has had success on the International stage where she represents New Zealand in both Surf Lifesaving and Swimming.
During the awards function the 570 people in attendance recognized four former sports greats, Ted Morgan (Boxing), Ross Collinge (Rowing), Trevor Manning & Alan McIntyre (Hockey) as they were inducted as Sports Legends into the Wellington Sports Legends Hall of Fame.
Simply known as Daniel the Wellington Phoenix Brazilian attacking midfielder was voted by the public of Wellington for the Jeff Gray BMW Personality of the Year Award. Daniel has certainly made a name for himself in Wellington. Since being signed to the team in July 2007, Daniel has won the hearts and respect of Wellington football fans (The Yellow Fever included), with his flamboyant play-making and ability to set up and score goals.
“The Dominion Post Wellington Sportsperson of the Year awards dinner has once again been a great night for celebrating and recognizing Wellington regions excellence in Sport. Being an Olympic year it was also special to induct four previous Olympians into the Wellington Sports Legends Hall of Fame”, Sport Wellington Region Chief Executive Officer Paul Cameron said.
