Heritage And The Military
During the month of June 2008, the Wellington Region Heritage Promotion Council will celebrate our region’s rich Pākehā and Māori military heritage.
Military historian Peter Cooke will launch this year’s Heritage Month programme at 4pm on Sunday 1 June at the Trentham Military Camp in Upper Hutt. The majority of events have been organised by the council’s members, with the valued support of people and organisations from outside the membership group.
A brochure outlining the full list of activities for the Hutt Valley, Porirua, Kapiti, the Wairarapa and Wellington is available at i-SITE visitor centres and libraries in all regions.
You can also view the full programme at www.wellingtonheritagepromotions.org.nz
Here are just a few of the activities taking place in the Greater Wellington area:
- A photographic display at the Petone Library about the Petone Old Navals, who were the first volunteer armed force in the Hutt Valley
- Sunday train rides in restored carriages from the wartime era at the Silver Stream Railway Museum
- Photographic displays of Royal New Zealand Air Force aircraft activity at the Kapiti Coast District Library and Museum of Aviation at the Paraparaumu Airport
- A military history bus tour of sites in Porirua City
- Guided tours of soldiers’ graves in Wairarapa and Akatarawa cemeteries
- Special open days at Fort Ballance and Wright’s Hill Fortress
- A display of wedding gowns from World War II plus Navy and Air Force clothing from the Pointon Collection in Masterton
- Tour of military sites on Matiu/Somes Island organized by the Department of Conservation
- And much much more
The Wellington Regional Heritage Promotion Council Inc. is made up of people and organisations interested in promoting our heritage.
