Top Peformers At Writers And Readers Festival
Getting in the groove for NZ Music Month, we are very pleased to confirm that Dave Dobbyn and Victoria Girling-Butcher
will each perform a song from their new, unreleased albums as part of a discussion on the craft of songwriting with
Hip-Hop/R’n’B star John Chong-Nee (bottom left) and Play It Strange CEO Mike Chunn (MC).
THIS WILL BE THE FIRST CHANCE FOR AUCKLANDERS TO HEAR DAVE DOBBYN’S NEW WORK. They will also perform snippets of their
work to illustrate the songwriting process, charting the changes to a song as it journeys from conception through to the
finished recording.
The Songwriters Speak session at the Auckland Writers & Readers Festival is presented in association with APRA. Join us for this very special event on Wednesday 14 May,
7.30-9pm when Dave Dobbyn, Victoria Girling-Butcher and John Chong-Nee discuss the theme: Are song lyrics poetry? “Poems
have to do all their work on the page whereas lyrics are constantly inflected and modified – indeed interpreted – by the
musical accompaniment and, crucially, by the voice. Some lyricists produce lyrics so in advance of the requirements of
song that we respond to them in the same way we respond to poetry” (Harry Ricketts).
