Kiwi Men Love Their Mums
Mother's Day is more important to Kiwi men than birthdays and Christmas according to Wellington-based messaging company Aangel. "We have noticed a significant number of messages from guys in the last six days relating to Mother's Day, it is certainly much more than we see around Christmas time," says William Cass, CEO of popular mobile phone service Aangel.com.
Recently featured on TV3's Sunrise program, Aangel allows users to set themselves reminders for meetings or things to do by using their voice. Messages are transcribed and sent back the the user's email in the form of a reminder. "We are getting present ideas, sale directions and lots of people just trying to not forget about their mums".
Cass also expects a big surge of people using Aangel on the day to dictate loving text messages to their mums. "It always happens around big days like Christmas and New Years Eve, people call Aangel to speak out a text message. We type it up then send it back out to their phones where they can forward it on to friends or loved ones as a text. It's really neat".
Aangel messaging was developed in New Zealand by Wellington entrepreneurs Cass and business partner Shane Cole. The company was selected as a finalist last year at the TUANZ Innovation Awards. The company has several thousand subscribers to its $10 per month service They need to be on-account Vodafone customers to qualify. "Of course with number portability, that is not such a big deal anymore," says Cass. "Telecom customers can keep their 027 number but come over to Vodafone and get Aangel, which we have seen a lot of". He says over 10 per cent of the Aangel database is now 027 numbers.
Aangel also aims to expand overseas in the near future. "We have seen a huge explosion in this space since we started," says Cass. While he would not reveal any further details, he would add that it is essential for Kiwi tech companies to get offshore to get access to decent-sized markets. The way that may come about is not always obvious, according to Cass, but companies should always be looking for international partnership and investment opportunities.
What's with the double A in Aangel? "It is simple, like our product,"Cass says. "When you save the Aangel number, 808, in your phone, it will be right at the top of your phone list".
