MEDIA RELEASE
See your name in lights and your work on the big screen… enter the 2008 EnhanceTV ATOM Awards!
MELBOURNE - Monday 5 May, 2008 - Entries have opened for the 2008 Enhance TV ATOM awards – Australia and New Zealand's most prestigious awards for achievements in Film, Television, Animation and Multimedia. Anyone who has produced a short film, documentary, animation, electronic game, educational resource, television program or innovative new media work is encouraged to enter their production in the ATOM awards, which celebrate and recognise excellence and achievement in these important media…and will put their name up in lights!
Each year, the ATOM Awards are open to the education and industry sectors, students, production companies, independent filmmakers, educational bodies and educational producers.
The ATOM awards program not only offers ATOM Award nominees and winners high profile publicity, the recognition associated with being an ATOM participant also assists in opening doors for the promotion of their work…and can lead to new opportunities to excel at their craft.
Awards will be presented to the most outstanding entrants in over thirty categories at the 2008 EnhanceTV ATOM Awards gala presentation, held in the Plaza Ballroom at the Regent Theatre on Friday 24 October, 2008.
“The ATOM Awards are unique in that they recognise both student and professional work and as such, can be key in providing those people who are new to the industry with exposure and the chance to get a leg up in their field,” commented Amber Nelson, Event Manager, 2008 EnhanceTV ATOM Awards.
“The ATOM Awards program has been created by the Australian Teachers of Media specifically to highlight the fact that there are so many talented individuals, of all ages and production companies out there that create brilliant and inspirational works each year. We hope that the reputation of our awards program both encourages and supports the ongoing creation of new, quality content that provides entertainment and education to both local and international audiences,” she added.
The judging panels for the 2008 Enhance TV ATOM Awards will include a number of film and multimedia industry specialists as well as a number of judges representing a ‘sample’ of the target audience in certain sections – for example teachers and children in the Best Children’s Television Series and Primary School categories. This year, a number of ‘celebrity judges’ - well known in their own field - are also being sought to create another important branch of the judging panel.
Mrs Nelson concluded, “It is important to make sure that the ATOM Awards remain ‘true’ to the intended outcome of the media at hand and are relevant to the industry. It is not uncommon for a production to receive rave reviews and be held in high acclaim yet fail to have the same impression on audiences. That’s why we make sure we have a judging panel that is also representative of the production’s potential viewing audience. The producer can be sure that their production is being judged from every angle and the accolade is well deserved.”
Entries for the 2008 Enhance TV ATOM Awards will close at 12pm AEST on Tuesday 10 June, 2008. For more information about the 2008 Enhance TV ATOM Awards please visit www.atomawards.org

About the ATOM Awards
The ATOM Awards were established in 1982 by the Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM) - an independent, non-profit association promoting media education and screen literacy in primary, secondary and tertiary education and the broader community.
Each year, the ATOM Awards recognise excellence in over thirty categories of Film, Television, Animation and Multimedia and celebrate the very best of Australian and New Zealand production.
The 2008 EnhanceTV ATOM Awards are open to the education and industry sectors, students, production companies, independent filmmakers, educational bodies and educational producers in both countries.
Using the ATOM Awards, ATOM publications and ATOM Professional Development Victoria, ATOM is actively engaged in the promotion of Australian product into the education and industry market. As such, the ATOM Awards are unique in their incorporation of the educational market with the broader industry.
The combination of student and professional awards not only allows the ATOM Awards to provide all-important early career exposure and experience for emerging professionals, but also provides promotional opportunities for winners and finalists.
