Local Musicians Take A Shot At Directing
With the advances of new technologies and hardware becoming more affordable by the day, Wellington based hip-hop group Beatrootz have put their musical endeavours to the side to try their hand at video directing.
“We’re not film savvy by any means, but with the burst in online video sites like YouTube, we saw that more and more people were moving away from traditional television sets and posting their own videos online”. To catch this new age buzz, the Wellington trio opted to shoot and direct a music video for their new song. When funding options fell through and with no budget to produce the video, Beatrootz took the DIY approach that Kiwis are renown for.
“We surfed the (inter)net and went through tutorial after tutorial on video editing because we had no budget to pay anyone else to do it”. The result is a music video filmed, produced, directed, and edited by the group. The angle they took was one which represented their live stage performance. “There are some cool things that can be done with a little imagination and a bit of hard work”.
Beatrootz are a hip-hop group signed to independent music label Black Keys Entertainment. They have released 3 singles and 3 videos to date, and are in the process of finalising their debut album to be released in July 2008.
