Wellington’s premiere hip hop dance group – Legacy, took Auckland by storm at the National Hip Hop dance competition (19 April) by securing a top 2 placing to qualify for the 2008 World Hip Hop dance competition in Las Vegas in July. Legacy battled it out with the best of the best throughout the country to cement a place in the kiwi contingent for Las Vegas, which will see Legacy having another shot at the World title. The top three dance groups (in the adults division) have been selected to fly the kiwi flag in Las Vegas and Legacy is the only/first dance group outside the Auckland region representing N.Z. in the adults division.
Legacy is one of the Worlds leading Pacific Island dance groups with dancers based in the Wellington region. Legacy was established in 2006 to attend the 2006 World Hip Hop dance competition in Los Angeles where they placed in the top 10 to qualify for the World Final. Since then, Legacy has performed for more than 45,000 people around N.Z. and South Pacific including sell out shows ‘A Hip Hop Legacy’ (Dance Your Socks Off Festival 07) and ‘The Chronicles’ (Fringe Festival 08). Legacy was also awarded ‘Best Fringe New Comers’ and ‘High Commended Dance Show’ in the Wellington Fringe Festival Awards.
The race is now on to raise $40,000 by July for Legacy to compete and represent N.Z. in Las Vegas. A fundraising strategy has been put in place by Legacy to achieve this goal and there will be a series of fundraisers held by Legacy over the coming months.
Legacy cannot raise these funds alone because of the short time frame and need the assistance of the community, businesses and media throughout Wellington and N.Z. to raise $40,000 by July. Legacy have inspired many youth and aspiring dancers through their work in the community. Representing N.Z. in Las Vegas will further develop and enhance the skills of the dancers in Legacy resulting in them sharing their experiences and passing on what they’ve learnt to the people they’ve inspired.
PLEASE HELP LEGACY TAKE N.Z. HIP HOP TO THE WORLD!
