KO World Series postponed until 2 May 2008
Promoter of the KO World Series, Dixon McIver, announced today that the Wellington event will be postponed for three weeks to ensure the capital city is given the very best event possible.
Stage two of the World Series was due to be hosted in Wellington this Saturday, but will now be held at the TSB Bank Arena in Wellington at 6.00pm, Saturday 2 May.
“Postponing the Wellington event allows us to get the fundamentals right so we can deliver a world class KO event,” says McIver.
International fighters are coming to Wellington from USA, Uganda, Thailand, Australia, Ghana, Czech Republic, Turkey, Thailand, and Mexico and world ranked boxer and KO fighter, Emanuel Augustus arrived in New Zealand yesterday to officially launch the Wellington event. Augustus adored NZ upon arrival the fighter known as the “Road Warrior” has tangoed with the best such as Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather and Micky Ward. He was also voted the ESPN fighter of the year in 2001. Upon completion of his appearance on CODE last night with KO World Series Ambassador Jonah Lomu, Augustus stated “man this place is beautiful and I really admire the culture, after winning the title in Wellington I want to fight here again as soon as possible”.
Wellington is one of four events to be hosted in the lead up to the world final which will be hosted in Las Vegas on 6 September 2008. KO World Series Boxing in Wellington will host the most extensive international card ever held in New Zealand not to mention the first in the capitol for 18 years. The first event was held at the TelstraClear Pacific Arena in Auckland on February 9 under the KO World Series Kickboxing circuit which will run parallel to the Boxing circuit. Wellington is the second (2 May), followed by Macau on 10 May and Zadar, Croatia on 4 July with Las Vegas on September 6. The overall KO World Series grand final of Boxing and Kickboxing will take place in Prague, Czech Republic on 25 October.
This new KO competition in stand-up kickboxing offers world tournament crowns at middleweight (to 72kg), cruiserweight (86kg) and heavyweight (open) as opposed to the Japanese-controlled K1 which is only contested at open weight. On the other hand the KO World Series Boxing shall be contested at Lightweight, Junior Middleweight, Super Middleweight and Cruiserweight. KO World Series will work with all major sanctioning bodies to crown the series champions.
Organiser Dixon McIver said the KO World Series "delivers action-packed international bouts with the world’s best fighters."
The global tournament has been made possible thanks to a multi million dollar joint venture with an unnamed Hong Kong consortium.
“The deal offers global accessibility and affordability – getting this great fighting sports entertainment delivered right to your home".
Ticket holders for Saturday’s event can either get a re-fund through Ticketek or use them at the re-scheduled event on 2 May.
