WHITE SWAN BLACK SWAN duo and THE SPOILS duo New Zealand Tour
WHITE SWAN BLACK SWAN have just released their EP “Castle of Useless Junk” and decided to invite their Melbourne friends the Spoils along to see some New Zealand countryside...and a few cozy, ramshackle cafes, bars, barns and lodges along the way...they already did it once with David Kilgour...they had so much fun they are doing it again.
The “Castle of Useless Junk” EP was recorded at the home of Sonya Waters and Ben Howe, tucked away from the city on a small hill beside a volcano, among overgrown gardens and rooms filled with collectables and old Super 8 movie projectors, flickering lamps and faded paintings of imagined places.
The EP was mixed and given a nice understated touch at the Beech House in Nashville USA by none other than the legendary Mark Nevers, producer and engineer (and occasional band member) for artists such as Lambchop, Calexico, Andrew Bird, Will Oldham and of course our own David Kilgour.
Nick Bollinger writes in the NZ Listener on Castle of Useless Junk.
“The tone is not so much country as western. The disc was mixed in Nashville by Mark Nevers whose spacious, reverberant treatment of the twangy guitars, sparse piano and an occasional violin evoke wide desert landscapes, while the songs locate that desert somewhere in suburban New Zealand. The five songs on this debut EP whet the appetite for a full album”
THE SPOILS debut, "Hurtsville" was released to critical acclaim selling well overseas as well as in their home country of Australia. What followed were countless tours of Australia with the likes of Bonnie Prince Billy, Cat Power, The Flying Burrito Bros and Richard Buckner among others, a shelved recording of Brian Wilson inspired surf songs, a chapter dedicated to them in a book and the loss of two core members. In 2005 the Spoils released their second album, "Goodnight Victoria". Since then they have continued to tour Australia and Europe. This is their second visit to New Zealand.
