NZ Barista Championships Auckland Final
When: Saturday 5th April
Where: Allpress Roastery, Browns Mill Building, Cnr Adelaide St and Drake St, Freemans Bay
Time: 9am -7pm
What: The NZ Barista Champs consists of 3 regional finals (Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch) with the top two competitors from each region qualifying for the national final to be held in Wellington on May 18. The national champion will then represent New Zealand in the World Barista Championships (WBC) in Copenhagen, in June. Kiwis have historically done well at the WBC, three-time NZ Barista Champion Carl Sara placed 3rd in Tokyo last August.
Who: This weekend’s Auckland final will feature 26 top baristas from Auckland, Hamilton, Cambridge, Morrinsville and Whitianga and Tauranga. They will produce four espressos, four cappuccinos, and four signature coffees in fifteen minutes. Their coffee is judged by a panel of sensory and technical judges. The Auckland MC is previous NZ champion Carl Sara and the head judge will be world accredited Barista judge Chris White.
Background: The NZ Barista Champs were previously run by the Robert Harris Coffee Company but this year the national event has been taken over by the New Zealand Coffee Roasters Association. This brings it in line with World Barista Championships regulations, which state that it must be run by an independent association or body, and also encourages support for the event from a broader range of coffee-roasting companies.
The event is open to the public and the Caffetteria Allpress will be open all day for visitors to sit back and enjoy a cup of coffee during the competition.
