Bishop & Bagnall: Future Garden
Most people put their recycling curbside; New Zealand artists Bishop & Bagnall take furnishings and discarded furniture and create fine art and design.
Their latest exhibition, Future Garden, is on at Suite Gallery in Newtown, Wellington until 30 April 2008. By re-working old or discarded objects the couple have collaborated to create work that could be seen as contemporary art or design – and that’s the way they like it.
“Over the last few years their work has been made in relation to specific sites. They have then translated their experiences of these to gallery spaces, creating both tangible and imaginary landscapes where viewers become part of the environment”, says David Alsop, Suite Gallery owner.
Future Garden has been inspired by their new home and garden. They have transformed the gallery into an interior landscape space where birds are cut out of stiff servants’ hallway seats, florals are as equally at home on a tailored suit as they are on upholstered chairs and an old oak tree is painted into a beautifully refurbished upright sideboard.
Bishop & Bagnall have been making and exhibiting work together since 1993. They like to invite their audiences into the world they have created, to imagine other worlds and to become a character other than themselves.
The pair have exhibited widely in contemporary galleries throughout New Zealand, as well as in Vienna, Austria.
