Youth Charged Over Fatal Crash
Police have charged a 16 year old youth in relation to a fatal car crash at the intersection of Gardiners Road and Styx Mill Road, Northern Christchurch which occurred at 9.35 pm on the 20 March 2008 after a short Police pursuit.
A 16 year old female who had been a passenger in the vehicle died in Christchurch hospital on the evening of the 21 March 2008 as the result of head injuries suffered in the crash.
Police will not be releasing her name until Next of Kin have been advised -(likely midday 22/3/8).
A second female passenger in the vehicle remains in hospital in serious condition also as a result of head injuries. Her injuries are not believed to life-threatening.
The 16 year old youth will face the following charges when he appears in the Christchurch Youth Court on Saturday 22 March 2008;
Manslaughter, Reckless Driving causing Injury, Unlawfully taking a Motor vehicle, Burglary, Fails to stop for red and blue flashing lights, Fails to ascertain injury after an accident and Drives with excess Breath Alcohol.
The Police are continuing their investigation into the lead -up to the crash.
A representative of the Independent Police Conduct Authority meet with the Police investigation team earlier today and visited the crash site. They will continue with their investigations also.
