Cultural Groups announced for ASB Polyfest Showcase (29 March)
The winning groups from this year's ASB Polyfest will perform together at the Telstra Clear Pacific Events Centre on
Saturday, 29 March in a one night extravaganza of cultural dance.
The ASB Polyfest Showcase is a new event which celebrates cultural diversity and performance excellence, and allows the
public to see Maori & Pacific Island performance at its best.
The idea of holding a Secondary School Showcase has been discussed for a number of years, to celebrate the talent of
young Maori & Pacific Island performers. The concept has finally come to fruition this year, with the following school cultural
groups confirmed to take part -
Maori Auckland Girls Grammar
Cook Islands Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate
Niue Avondale College
Samoan Avondale College
Tonga James Cook High School & Wesley College
The ASB Polyfest has been running for 33 years, in which time it has grown into the largest Maori & Pacific Island festival in the world. This year's festival involved 66 schools, 200 cultural groups, and 9000 students.
The festival is highly competitive, with students devoting numerous hours to planning and practicing to perfect their
cultural dance performances. The ASB Polyfest Showcase provides an opportunity for the best of the Polyfest performances
to dance of the same stage in a full theatre production.
The vision for the Showcase is to create an iconic annual event celebrating the pride and passion of Maori & Pacific Island communities.
The ASB Polyfest Showcase takes place at 6:30pm on Saturday, 29 March at the Telstra Clear Pacific Events Centre.
