WHY ENTERTAINMENT PRESENT
AUSTRALIA/NZ 2008 TOUR
The veteran ‘clockwork punks’ finally wind up down under
Here comes the weekend! The Adicts -- “the longest-serving punk band with the original line-up”, and perhaps the only
one with a violin – have announced that they are bringing their carnival of lunacy and fun to Australia & NZ for the first time in March.
The Adicts are no ordinary punk band. So far, they have forgotten to grow up, change pace, get serious, or make any
concessions to the passing of time. There was no reunion necessary, as these Jokers in the Pack have never stopped
making manic high-energy records, touring Europe and the USA to ever-younger crowds, or altering their dress code to fit
any fashion. Then again, The Adicts’ dress code has always been rather, er, specialized.
In Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, the white-clad and bowler-hatted Alex and his Droogs stand out against the landscape
until, by the end of the film, they are co-opted into regular society and other uniforms. Not so for The Adicts: first
donning the distinctive Droog look over thirty years ago (with no thoughts of “ultraviolence” or any especially
antisocial behaviour), The Adicts have maintained this sartorial style along with their distinctive, up-tempo,
power-punk approach over the decades, avoiding being co-opted into anything, and standing out against the rest of the
punk landscape. Then again, when your frontman is called Monkey, always wears Joker pancake make-up, and eschews the
Droog-ish whites of the rest of the band for eye-damaging bright colours and patterns, there’s little chance of blending
in with anything.
Forming in Ipswich as the first wave of punk hit the UK, The Adicts had entered the public consciousness by 1980 with a
bright sound that was more in tune with The Dickies or the Ramones than the heavy ‘social commentators’ who had come to
characterize punk by that stage of the game. Still, there they were alongside the leather, studs’n’spikes brigade on
such compilations as Punk And Disorderly (the band’s ‘Straightjacket’ was a highlight); and with tunes like ‘Viva La
Revolution’ and ‘Chinese Takeaway’ having become punk anthems, The Adicts’ debut album Songs Of Praise entered the Indie
Charts in the top five (something which ‘Ludwig Van’ has never achieved)..
The Adicts have not slowed down since: if any evidence is required, just check out the footage from their recent shows
on youtube. The band’s first visit to these shores will be a blast. Do you like fun? Well, don’t miss these shows (if
you’ve got any yarbles).
