Mind Your Head
Shelly Bay on Wellington harbour inspires creativity for a group of well-known Wellington artists. For nine years they
have induged their passion for art in this idyllic waterfront setting at the former air force base. During that period
many Wellingtonians have attended their very sucessful autumn and spring exhibitions at the Officers' Mess in Shelly Bay
The opening of their new weekend gallery “MIND YOUR HEAD” brings together years of both collective and individual
experience in the arts. Wellington is the cultural capital and we are priviledged at having so many unique galleries.
“MIND YOUR HEAD” will be a worthwhile addition says Gail Higgs-West one of the residient artists at the base.
The opening reception for Shelly Bay’s new art gallery, “Mind Your Head, will be held from 11am to 5pm Saturday March 8
at the gallery. The reception and gallery are free to the public. The base is on the drive out to Point Halswell on the
Miramar headland.
Exhibits on display through March include works by Jane Brimblecomb, Michael Browne, Ellen Coup, James Harcourt,
Gail Higgs-West, Jean Macaskill, Leigh Malcolm, Johnny Mills and Carlos Wedde.
The artworks in the gallery represent probably the most productive use yet made of the sun-drenched strip of west-facing
harbour.
Jane Brimblecomb
Jane is a multimedia artist working in glass, bronze, clay and paint. Jane’s mirrors are highly sought after and adorn
many of Wellington’s newest upmarket apartments.
Michael Browne
Michael has held senior teaching positions at leading art schools in England, and exhibited throughout Europe and, New
Zealand. He work is held in major public and private collections in several countries including at Te Papa.
Ellen Coup
Ellen’s murals can be found throughout the central Wellington area. She has been identified as one of the capital’s
mainsteam talents and her paintings are an investment for the future.
James Harcourt
After the recent sell out exhibition of James’s work at the Thistle Gallery this will be the last opportunity to
purchase works before his extended South American tour.
Gail Higgs-West
Gail has mixed media works on display, principally inspired by her travels in the Pacific Islands, most recently the
Marquesas and Samoa.
Jean Macaskill
A Chelsea School of Art, London graduate and arts advisor to schools in Auckland and Wellington. Jeanne has exhibited in
many public and private galleries throughout NZ and has work in major private and corporate collections in several
countries.
Leigh Malcolm
Leigh recently attended a bronze workshop in France and she has exhibited both sculpture and painting for a number of
years in the Wellinton area.
Johnny Mills
Johnny has been exhibiting with the Artbase group for several number of years. He is both a talented musican and
painter.
Carlos Wedde
Carlos works at the base on projects involving theatre, visual arts and film. He is a freelance art installer and
technician at Massey University.
The Art Gallery is open free to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends and open by request during weekdays
