Hamilton Weet-Bix Tryathlon Hits Record Numbers And Kicks Off The 2008 Series
The first Weet-Bix Tryathlon event for 2008 kicked off in Hamilton on Sunday morning, at the University of Waikato, and
reached a record number of registrations. Over 1500 children between the ages of 8-15 took part in the event.
The next event in the Weet-Bix Tryathlon series will be held in Tauranga, this coming Sunday, February 17th, followed
by 9 more events throughout the country, including Hastings (Feb 20th), Auckland (Feb 24th), Dunedin (Mar 2nd) and
Christchurch on March 9th.
The high number of registrations for the first of the 11 events in the series bodes well for the World Record attempt
to be the largest children’s triathlon in the world, as sanctioned by the International Triathlon Union based in Canada.
Weet-Bix Brand Manager, Tanne Andrews, says “The Hamilton event was one of the best events I’ve ever attended, the
atmosphere was great, the parents and kids got right into the spirit of the event. It was an excellent way to start the
Weet-Bix Tryathlon season.”
Celebrities in attendance at the Hamilton Weet-Bix Tryathlon included 2008 Beijing Olympic qualifier Debbie Tanner,
2008 Olympic hopeful Andrea Hewitt, Charlie from TV2 show What Now?, and Olympic gold medal winners Georgina and
Caroline Evers-Swindell.
Over 100,000 kids of all abilities have been involved in the Weet-Bix Tryathlon nationally over the last 15 years, and
this year it is estimated that over 20,000 children across the nation will take part. Given the small population of New
Zealand, setting a World Record for the largest children’s triathlon will be a huge achievement for Kiwi kids.
The Weet-Bix Tryathlon Foundation has been established to enable even more kids to take part in the Tryathlon. The
Foundation will do this by providing worthy nominees with a subsidy or complete funding of entry fees to the Weet-Bix
Tryathlon event, or via the subsidy of necessary equipment.
