Project K Teenagers Make Leap of Their Life
Twenty-five teenagers from Project K, will tandem skydive out of a Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) Hercules C130 at
Whenuapai Airbase this Saturday the 16th of February.
For the second time, Project K students have been offered this unique opportunity by Jump Start, a not-for-profit
organisation established in 2007 by skydiving enthusiast, Peter Maher.
Last year Maher wanted to do something special for his 50th birthday and rather than have a party he chose to make a
difference in the lives of 50 young people.
Maher chose Project K, a free youth development programme for 14 – 15-year-olds co-founded by adventurer Graeme Dingle,
because Project K helps young people set goals and face challenges, overcoming everyday difficulties in life.
“Jump Start is a perfect example of how we encourage teenagers in our programme to trust others, overcome their fears
and take advantage of any opportunity that comes their way” says Lani French, Project K National Manager.
Through personal involvement with skydiving at a young age and watching his son rediscover his confidence through the
sport, Maher wanted to offer other teenagers the opportunity to challenge themselves and experience something truly
unique.
Ngawaiata Tobin (14) from Project K Manukau is taking part in this year’s Jump Start and had this to say about being
involved; “This will be a chance in a lifetime! If I can do this, I can do anything!”
Twenty-five CanTeen members will also get to share in this amazing experience and tandem skydive out of the Hercules
C130 thanks to Jump Start.
Jump Start has been made possible by the generous support of the RNZAF who is providing the aircraft and crew, and the
skydiving community who have generously donated their time and services.
