Taking Out The Tour In Style
He wasn't even born when the Wellington Cycle Classic started 21 years ago, but today 18 year old Australian Travis
Meyer took out the Tour in style. First up on the last day today was the Time Trial round the Miramar peninsula. Riders
started at two minute intervals from Scorching Bay and faced a 12km cycle-your-guts-out speed test around the beautiful
bays to Miramar and back to Scorching Bay.
This was followed in the afternoon by a Criterium round the streets of downtown Wellington. For an hour the riders were
to race each other in laps of just over a minute each, but Meyer had other plans. Halfway into the race, and even though
his yellow tour leader's jersey was secure, he had blitzed the field to have lapped all except six riders. As one lapped
rider was overheard to say 'He's just taking the p*ss now'. It was a classy ride by a classy young rider; someone who it
will be interesting to watch in the future.
