Buskers festival ‘best in the world’
“It’s the best in the world.’’
That’s the view of Christchurch’s World Buskers Festival held by this year’s international line-up of street performers
as the popular event wraps up for another year.
The 10-day event has again attracted huge crowds, lured out by the warm weather and the chance to see some of the
world’s best street performers juggle, joke, and contort their way into people’s hearts.
“It’s been a wonderful 10 days,’’ says festival director Jodi Wright. “The weather has been great and people have really
got into the spirit of the event. All the hard work that goes into organizing the festival is worth it when you see so
many people out enjoying themselves, huge smiles on their faces.’’
It is estimated more than 290,000 people attended this year’s festival, making it the most successful festival in the
event’s 15 year history.
“The calibre of the performers we had this year was exceptional and that’s reflected in the size of the crowds,’’ Jodi
Wright says. “Numbers are up about 15 per cent.’’
She says it is pleasing to see people making the most of the opportunity to see the performers in action, with most
attending three to four shows each.
“The challenge now is to make next year’s festival even better,’’Jodi Wright says.
