Kiwi artists to work in Seoul and Hong Kong
Two talented and accomplished New Zealand artists have been selected for Asia New Zealand Foundation artists’
residencies in Hong Kong and South Korea later this year.
Fiona Amundsen and Eve Armstrong, both based in Auckland, were chosen from an unprecedented number of applications with
nearly 40 received last month for the two positions.
Ms Amundsen, a lecturer in art history and photography at AUT University in Auckland, will travel to Seoul to begin her
two month residency on April 7 as a guest of the National Art Studio of the Korean Museum of Contemporary Art.
The opportunity is being offered by the Asia New Zealand Foundation which will provide a return airfare and a daily
stipend. It is in partnership with the Korea Foundation which will provide Ms Amundsen’s accommodation.
Ms Amundsen has been exhibiting in artist run spaces, dealer galleries and public institutions over the past nine years.
Her work is included in a number of collections including the Chartwell Collection, the University of NSW and Victoria
University.
Her work has also been included in a number of survey exhibitions on New Zealand photography, as well as the published
2005 collection Contemporary New Zealand Photographers.
Eve Armstrong will also begin her residency in Hong Kong in April, participating in a month long series of planned
workshops with three other international artists and four local counterparts.
The Hong Kong International Artists’ Workshop: 4 x 4 position for a New Zealand artist is being offered by the Asia New
Zealand Foundation. Host organisation, the AiR Association Limited will provide a fee, production subsidy, as well as
studio and living spaces for the visiting artist.
The Asia New Zealand Foundation will provide the cost of a return airfare to Hong Kong and a daily stipend.
Ms Armstrong was born in Upper Hutt. She graduated from the Elam School of Fine Arts in 2003 and in 2006 was an
inaugural recipient of the Arts Foundation of New Zealand New Generation Award.
Recent projects have included a solo show at Artspace, Auckland in 2005, an artist residency at Enjoy gallery in
Wellington in 2006 and solo projects at biennials at SCAPE in Christchurch and Busan, South Korea.
