TVNZ Wins Delhi Commonwealth Games Rights
TVNZ has secured comprehensive broadcast rights for coverage of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010 - continuing a 40-year tradition of screening every Commonwealth Games since the beginning of television in New Zealand.
Mr Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman of the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, said, "I am delighted to confirm that the exclusive rights for the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, which are represented by Fast Track, our exclusive broadcast rights agency, have been acquired by TVNZ.
"TVNZ has been very committed to maintaining their long-established association with the Commonwealth Games movement and I have absolutely no doubt that sports fans living in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands will thoroughly enjoy the comprehensive coverage of our Games that TVNZ will make available to them."
Chief Executive Rick Ellis says New Zealand has always participated strongly at the Commonwealth Games, achieving a high degree of success, and this proud record has always been reflected in the high levels of interest shown by viewers.
Mr Ellis said TVNZ plans to provide its broadest ever coverage of a Commonwealth Games with comprehensive event coverage across all media platforms, offering viewers the widest choice of channels and technologies that has ever been available. He said TVNZ's strategy of providing content 'on every screen' was perfectly showcased in an event like the Games.
"TVNZ looks forward to working in partnership with the Delhi Organising Committee to ensure the 2010 Games coverage provides a successful stage for the athletes competing in India and an inspirational event for the viewing audience back in New Zealand," Mr Ellis said.
The package of rights secured by TVNZ covers Free to Air, Pay and New Media rights for both television and radio in New Zealand and in defined Pacific Islands.
TVNZ plans to onsell the radio and pay television rights and reach sublicence agreements with the relevant Pacific territories.
The 2010 Commonwealth Games run from October 3 to 14 in Delhi. The last Games were in 2006 in Melbourne.
