MIC Toi Rerehiko presents
Lonnie Hutchinson, Leilani Kake and Lesley Kaiser
MIC Toi Rerehiko launches into 2008 with an innovative and dynamic group of artists who bring a Pacific flavour to the
Karangahape Road gallery.
Lonnie Hutchinson is no stranger to art patrons across New Zealand; a full time multi-media artist, her range of styles
has become both eclectic and eccentric. Her latest work, Fish Eyes, is the beginning of a series of works documenting
Hutchinson’s family history and presents the audience with familiar situations. In this work, ‘Nana’ and two of her
granddaughters, who are sisters, converse over topics including 'eating fish eyes' to dialogues on 'spiders', 'stars'
and 'what do you want to be when you grow up'. These conversations give insight into the matriarchal and
cross-generational relationships between a grandmother and her grand daughters and those of the grand daughters and
their grandmother.
Ariki, Cook Island/Maori artist Leilani Kake’s latest work, is a video installation which explores the Cook Island hair
cutting ritual and the social processes that surround it regarding family, extended family and community. The ceremony
represents a transition from a child to being a man. The installation has been well received during its tenure at
Otara’s Fresh Gallery, and combined with Kake’s 2005 multi-screen video installation, Talking Tivaevae, it will be an
intriguing exhibition.
Lesley Kaiser's Preserve, Renew, Invent [Light Bytes] is a local and international project that involves archiving and
disseminating aphoristic texts in a range of public sites and media. A multi platform "art-in-a-suitcase", its various
components pack into a portable edition containing DVD components, an artists' book of archival photography, and ceramic
plates (this limited edition of ceramics is an inaugural edition for MIC, and reflects it's name change to Media and
Interdisciplinary Arts Centre). Lesley Kaiser is a senior lecturer in art and design at AUT University. Her website (
lesleykaiser.com) is due to be launched in conjunction with the exhibition in early February.

Leilani Kake’s “Ariki”and “Talking Tivaevae” will be exhibited in Gallery 2.
Lesley Kaiser’s “Preserve, Renew, Invent [Light Bytes]” will be exhibited in Gallery 3
