PRESS RELEASE - Hastings, Hawke’s Bay, January 9, 2008 – Korokipo Springs the premier outdoor event venue located in the heart of Hawke’s Bay is proud to announce the 2008 inaugural Korokipo Springs Contemporary Country Music Festival with headline artists The Warratahs and Shona Laing & her band The Sparrows and Lindon Puffin.
Held on Waitangi Day, Wednesday February 6, 2008 the festival will showcase great New Zealand musical talents in lush countryside landscape surroundings of vineyards, fruit trees and rolling hills. The flat, grass venue space with its spring water feature evokes a lazy & relaxed country lifestyle, providing the perfect ambience for this inaugural event.
The Warratahs are an iconic and respected New Zealand music institution. Forming a country band in 1985 was an unlikely step as Kiwi pub rock and new wave dominated the music scene, now celebrating more than twenty years of music, the distinctive vocals of Barry Saunders and the individual violin style of Nik Brown form the core of The Warratahs sound. Still touring and playing at shows and festivals, The Warratahs continue to pull the crowds and impress with their strong and exciting performances.
Since making the finals of New Faces in 1972 with a song called 1905, Shona Laing has continued to perform and record and is one of New Zealand’s much loved female singer/songwriters, with a music resume extending beyond our shores to Australia, Europe, London, Tokyo and more. In 2001 APRA celebrated its 75th anniversary and invited guests to vote for the Top Ten New Zealand Songs of all time, Glad I’m not a Kennedy was voted in at an impressive number 24.
Last year was a great for New Zealand’s infamous rockabilly rebel Lindon Puffin with two national tours, support slots for American superstars Tenacious D & NZ’s own Greg Johnson, a hit TV documentary ‘Figure 8000’ - Sky TV & C4, a handful of sell out shows at the Christchurch Arts Festival and a critically acclaimed new album named ‘Show Pony’ reaching No. 22 in the NZ album charts!
Puffin thrives in the live environment and performs over 100 shows a year in venues from cafés & bars to festivals & town halls, he has an uncanny ability to read a crowd, draw them into a show and entertain them with a wild mix of upbeat originals, unusual covers and hilarious banter. Likened to a cross between Elvis Costello & Bill Bailey, Puffin performs live with a variety of instruments including, guitar, piano, ukulele, harmonica, mini drums and his infamous kazoo; on which he imitates epic guitar solos & sax breaks.
Over the years, country, contemporary & alt country music has taken the music world by storm, reaching diverse audiences with its broad popular appeal attributed to great lyrics, interesting music compositions and charismatic & passionate artists who have the ability to cross over to reach mainstream & traditional audiences.
