Dogs In Hot Cars A Killer
The Auckland SPCA is issuing a stern warning on the danger of leaving dogs unattended in hot cars will result in
possible prosecution.
Chief Executive Bob Kerridge commented that "this firm action is necessary as there is the distinct probability that
many dogs will suffer, some will even die, if left in a car for even a short period of time during the hot summer
months. We have to consider their safety and if such action is necessary to teach the public the perils of dogs in hot
cars then so be it", he concluded.
SPCA Auckland General Manager David Lloyd-Barker said "we urge people to engage their brains before locking pets in what
could become a living hell on hot days. Our Inspectors are called to more and more incidents of dogs incarcerated in
cars and if we cannot find the driver quickly we will have no option but to smash a window to save the animal concerned,
followed by charges being laid."
"The SPCA acknowledges that the temptation to include the family dog in outings is understandable", Kerridge added, "but
people must be made aware that such 'acts of kindness' can be a death warrant for the animal if the car is used for
confinement".
