Dislexic high school drop out named Author of the Year!!
Dislexic Pukekohe Author Pirie Brown was last night named Author of the Year by the National Speakers Assocation of NZ,
(Auckland) Awards ceremony, for his recently released first book ‘Pirie Brown’s Pocket Book of Bloody Good Ideas’.
Pirie accepted the award and then sat on stage to explain that he’d had to drop out of school at the age of 15 to help
support his widowed mother, and that he couldn’t read anyway, let alone write anything. He then went on to describe how
he gathered inspiration to finish writing his book by sitting in the middle of the road in Whangamata last summer,
meeting people who came up and questioned what he was doing there.
Brown describes himself as an eccentric entrepreneur with a passion for business and creating value by ensuring the
‘values’ are the top priority in any company. A lot of this book is based on his personal experience of stepping in and
totally turning around a large morally and financially bankrupted company in 1997. He was challenged with desperate
customers, disillusioned employees and no stock or forward orders – so set about mastering the powerful simplicity of
business values, in order to re-establish this devastated business in a very competitive market.
Pirie Brown’s Pocket Book of Bloody Good Ideas is small, compact, delivers a powerful message in a style that makes it
easy for anyone to understand it’s importance. Described by the judges as " a quirky and very different book, one that
has the potential to challenge and change business behaviour if given the opportunity".
