The summer season of American Football in Wellington has reached the half way point. The games have ranged from low scoring defensive battles to high scoring offensive showcases. The one consistent is that the Protein Cookie Spartans have always ended up with a "W" on the score sheet at the end of the game. The Protein Spartans are based in the Hutt Valley but draw players not only from Upper & Lower Hutt but also Wellington and Porirua as athletes flock to the winning programme.
Nathan Lambert a 6 year veteran of the game has been in career form this year with 10 sacks, 47 tackles, 3 blocked punts and a blocked kick. "Nate appears to be everywhere" says head coach Michael Wilson. "Teams will run plays to the other side of the field but after the dust clears it will be Nate on the bottom of the pile". Lambert is on short odds to pick up the defensive MVP award and possibly the league MVP if he continues to show this form. The one person who is not enjoying Nate performance is Daniel Kendall who plays free safety (the equivalent of a fullback in rugby) for the Spartans. "Nate is killing my stats" he says in jest. " I used to make 15 tackles a game but the guys just aren't getting through to me".
Ese Amosa is the Spartans offense standout for the first half of the season. Averaging over a touchdown and over 100 yards rush a game. Amosa has shown team time and time again that it takes more than one player to slow him down and often three or four to stop him.
The Protein Cookie Spartans play the Knight City Knights 4pm Saturday the 14th of December at Raroa Park in Johnsonville and are looking to head in to the Christmas break at 5-0.
