For the fourth fabulous year running, Auckland was ablaze with lip-gloss, hairspray and very, very tall head gear when Queen of the Whole Universe took to the ASB stage for a very queer beauty pageant. Queen of the Whole Universe 2007 was an incredible success last Friday night entertaining an audience of 1700 and raising a record $40,000 for the New Zealand AIDS Foundation.
Of course, being a beauty pageant meant there was fierce competition in the air. For the judges, it was a tough call with glamour and talent aplenty. In the end, much like in the world of soccer, Brazil took home the top prize.
Coco Cabana, Miss Brazil, was crowned 2007’s ‘Queen of the Whole Universe’ with, again much like soccer, Miss Germany, Volta Gooden Tight, being runner up. Third place was awarded to Miss Morocco - Insultana Polyandre Xpi Ali Docious.
Friday night’s event wasn’t just about the top three Queens. Specialist prizes were awarded to those viewed as being the most congeal, charismatic and inspirational participant; this year’s Miss Durex Congeniality was won by Miss Ukraine, Cheryl Noble, while Miss Romania Ireen Kurtin picked up Miss Purfex Pins and Needles and Betty Winsor, Miss England, picked up the Motomail Beauty with a Purpose Award.
In a female (sic) dominated competition, it’s always a pleasure to see what the leather men have to offer, and this year’s winner of the Mr. MSN Leatherman Crown was Dick Van Dyke, otherwise known as Leather Man 8.
With this year’s overwhelming success Queen of the Whole Universe is already confirmed for 2008, celebrating its 5th anniversary on Saturday November 15th. Audiences are advised to start getting their glad rags together for this auspicious and glamourous annual event.
This year’s event was proudly supported by gold sponsor PURFEX with the assistance of THE EDGE Public Programmes and event management by Eventimento. Over the last four years Queen of the Whole Universe has raised over $100,000 for the New Zealand AIDS Foundation.
