Sandwiches Summerset 08
Day Nighter Music Festival, Basin Reserve, Wellington
Sandwiches Summerset day nighter music festival has scored resource consent to become an annual hit-out at Wellington’s Basin Reserve.
Sandwiches was granted the resource consent by Wellington City Council to operate and manage an annual outdoor music festival at the historic cricket ground from Easter Saturday 2008 onwards.
Bryce Mason, co director of the award-winning club says “big ups to Wellington people, Wellington City Council and Mt Victoria and Newtown Residents Associations for helping tick the positive in the Wellington box”
Raising his arms for six, he predicts, “When the day nighter kicks in, it’ll be a wicked vibe. Music is the new sport!”
In recent years, Mason and Sandwiches co-owners Jonnie Halstead and Wade Lipsham have won ‘Best Music/Entertainment Venue HANZ Awards for Excellence 2007, ‘Best Music Offering’ NZ Bartender Magazine Bar Awards 2007 and ‘Night Club of the Year’ NZ Bartender Magazine Bar Awards 2006.
Keeping their eye on the entertainment ball, Sandwiches launched the boutique music event last March at the heritage listed Basin Reserve, also dubbed the largest traffic island in the Southern hemisphere. The annual resource consent is the nod to also step up the scale of Sandwiches Summerset, from six to 12 hours, and to set up multiple stages.
Sunshine Sound System (NZ) will MC the live commentary, while two of last years in-form players, SHAPESHIFTER (NZ) in their only performance in the Capital City for 2008, and Tom Middleton (UK) return to the squad.
Middleton, DJ & producer, says “I'm buzzed up about comin' back next year to play at the best all-dayer this year. I couldn't believe the atmosphere and genuine music love. Wellies are living it and loving it deeply. Shapeshifter blew me away too. Can't wait for SummerSet 08!
While the full team is yet to be announced, several other big hitters of music have already caught the eye of Sandwiches selectors, including live acts LTJ Bukem (UK) Crazy Penis (UK) and Opensouls (NZ) plus DJs Downtown Brown (NZ) and legendary Norman Jay (UK) the superstar of Nottingham Hill Carnival.
