Millbrook celebrates new course record holder
Queenstown’s Millbrook resort was celebrating a new course record holder today (Wednesday November 28) after Wellington’s Peter Spearman-Burn shot a 10-under 62 to qualify for the Michael Hill New Zealand Open this week.
Astoundingly, the 18-year-old Miramar club amateur had only played the Millbrook course once before, in a practice round on Monday.
His spectacular round lowered the course record set by Phil Tataurangi in 2002 by two shots.
“My short game was the key,” the quietly-spoken youngster said after his win. “In the practice round I was always in the bunkers, so in the pre-qualifying round it made me think a lot about where I was going to place the ball because of the tricky bunkers on the course.”
He admitted that he “surprised himself”in doing so well.
“I was on a good run from the beginning,”he said. “I’ve scored 10-under at my home club before, but this is my lowest ever tournament result.”
Millbrook General Manager Jan Hunt said the result boded well for the golf-mad amateur.
“Our very own Sir Bob Charles first played in the Open when he was just 17, as Peter did last year, and Sir Bob won it when he was 18, so we’re hopeful that Peter may be able to emulate Sir Bob’s achievement.”
Millbrook presented Peter with a Millbrook shirt to celebrate his achievement, and a photo of him, together with his original score card, will be mounted and displayed in the resort’s Hole in One Bar.
