Jandal day set to be anything but a flip flop
They’ll be wearing them in Kilbirnie; they’ll be wearing them in Kaiapoi and Kaikohe. Jandals™ will be afoot all over
New Zealand on December 7.
The organisers of Bach 22 National Jandal Day are overwhelmed with the number of workplaces and groups registering to
take part in the fundraising effort in aid of Surf Life Saving New Zealand.
To encourage Kiwis to show their support for safe summers on our beaches, New Zealanders are being urged to don the
iconic footwear on December 7 in a joint initiative between Surf Life Saving New Zealand and Bach 22, a new range of
wine.
Bach 22 spokesperson Jane Bennett says nearly 400 businesses incorporating 25,000 people have already registered to take
part in the innovative fundraising effort.
“We announced Bach 22 National Jandal Day just a couple of weeks ago and the advertising and radio promotions just
started on Monday, so to have this many businesses already signed up is fantastic. Plainly Kiwis have a great affinity
with jandals and beaches and really appreciate the work Surf Lifesaving does to keep them safe.”
Just like on mufti day at school, New Zealanders from all walks of life are being encouraged to wear their jandals on
Friday December 7 and in return make a donation to Surf Life Saving New Zealand.
Office workers are being encouraged to take part by registering their workplace online, pledging a donation and donning
their jandals on the day.
Street collectors will be out in force nation-wide on the day and people can also donate online at www.nationaljandalday.co.nz.
Surf Life Saving New Zealand spokesperson Geoff Barry says until now the charity hasn’t had a national day of
fundraising.
“Last year 1,440 lives were saved by surf life guards, and that’s why we’re fundraising – to continue this service to
the community.
“New Zealand has a per capita drowning rate twice that of Australia, so we need to be doing so much more – like
increasing public education, expanding our services to increase our beach access and meeting the demand for more
equipment and training for our lifeguards.
“With our partnership with Bach 22 and the support of New Zealanders wearing their jandals on December 7, we are looking
forward to the inaugural National Jandal Day being a huge success and becoming an annual event in the Kiwi calendar.”
