New student art competition launched by City Art Rooms
Dealer gallery City Art Rooms is reinventing the traditional format of art competitions with the launch of the Young
Blood Salon – a show where young, emerging curators will select young, emerging artists.
Aimed at recognising talented art students, the Young Blood Salon will be Auckland region’s newest arts competition. The
winner will take home a prize package valued at over $4000.
Students one year into their art course are eligible to apply along with recent graduates. The deadline for entries is
November 23rd, 2007.
The jury is made up of three young curators who are already making an impression in the Auckland art scene:
- Stephen Cleland (Curatorial Assistant, Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts, Pakuranga)
- Ariane Craig-Smith (Curatorial Intern, Artspace, Auckland)
- Young Sun Han (Curator, City Art Rooms, Auckland)
“Instead of the more established people picking “what’s hot”, this show is about emerging curators reviewing their
peers” says Jury Member Young Sun Han.
The jury will choose one winner, who will receive funding from City Art Rooms to host a solo exhibition in 2008. Other
runner-up prizes will be announced during the opening preview event.
“Even though the deadline is closing in, we are still inviting entries” says Young Sun Han: “We know there are so many
talented students and we are interested to see as many submissions as possible in this first year of the competition.”
The grand prize is designed to provide the winner with vital strategic tools, expert advice, and opportunities to break
through the transition period from student to professional – including art supplies, framing, a website, career
workshops among other donated prizes.
All artworks in the Young Blood Salon will be for sale, making this an excellent opportunity for emerging and first-time
collectors to buy works from New Zealand’s next generation of talent.
All chosen finalists will be exhibited at City Art Rooms from December 4th, 2007 – February 2nd, 2008. The winner of the
grand prize will be announced during the awards event and party on December 4th, 2007, 5:30pm.
The general public is welcome to attend the opening preview and awards ceremony.
