Last chance this year to apply for grants
The next round of Wellington City Council grants are upon us. Not-for-profit community groups and organisations are urged to get their applications in by the end of the month.
This is the second round of the financial year, and is designed for projects planned from February 2008 onwards. The funding is available for projects that benefit the city socially, culturally, economically or environmentally. Applications for the grants close at 5pm, Friday 30 November.
Grants Team Leader Jenny Rains says the 2008 Matariki Festival and World Environment Day, which the capital city hosts next June, are among some of the events community groups can apply for funding towards.
“This is the best round to apply for a grant for these events, as groups will then have the time to adequately prepare with the funding they receive,” she says.
One event that received a grant from the July round takes place in a few weeks. Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Nga Mokopuna school in Seatoun received a grant to go towards the Festival on the Peninsular on 24 November.
Whanau chairperson Ana Tapiata says the Council supports Nga Mokopuna every year to run the community festival, Te Ra o Kupe, in recognition of the Seatoun area for the Maori explorer, Kupe.
“We are grateful to the Council for its continued support with staging, the PA system, arranging road closures, signage and other things that the grant goes towards.”
The festival, aimed at families and young people, will feature kai stalls, kapa haka, craft stalls, live music and an art exhibition with works for sale. It will be held at Marine Parade, Seatoun from 10am until 4pm. All are welcome.
